Enlightenment

I mentioned enlightenment in the very beginning of this thread. Let me count the ways: I've learned what igniters are and how they work. Learned about trailing and leading spark plugs. Learned the car will actually run just on trailing. Learned how not to use a ratchet on spark plugs. Learned rtv for gaskets. Learned tapping a given housing sideways to break and old gasket free. Learned to check the mounts on my oil cooler for droppage that could rub and compromise. Learned a lot of stuff needs to me removed to take out a simple radiator on my rx7. Learned to reinstall new foam under new radiator install... it has a purpose. Learned what tstat to stay away from and which temperature to buy a tstat for my car/climate. Learned it's nice to have smaller hands ( don't even go there, it's not true!!!) learned i might as well do some cosmetic improvements while all this stuff is off the car now. Learned to take my time and look at things from different angles- sometimes there's a better way just looking at it longer. Learned a 220 pc tool kit doesn't come with any extensions(!!) learned that so far Mazda designed a pretty userfriendly car to work on... I'm still learning

Evans coolant

ok boys here's a big question. Had anyone heard of Evans waterless coolant? Saw first on J Leno Garage. I'm intrigued but realize I'm Rotary everything else is not. But it might make sense. After all it's a closed system. I'm deleting the heat core, reconditioning the radiator. It'll be a new system. Would Evans be a good alternative? I already got a reply from Evans . Said they have used in in Rotary with much success just suggested new core, radiator and hoses. Well that's me!! If you get a chance check it out tell me what you think

I saw your SE there too! I wish I would have known what issues you were having. I had the tools, new connections, shrink tube, etc. I also had an upper/lower rad hose at my cabin, but it was for 12A. Maybe we could have made it work?

I was parked just 1 car ahead of you at the Dam. In your pictures I had already left, but I found this one that proves it!

The whole time I was there I was rolling with friends. Mostly RX8 folks. I missed out on a lot of the 1st Gen stuff sadly.

I may have talked to you a little bit, but I can't recall. So many new people I met down there lol.

I had to make a long drive as well, 13 hours back up the PA! Luckily we had no issues.

that had to be mine. That was my second 7 in 1986ish. I drive it till it had 82k on it. Sold it in 92 to an employee who drove it 6k and parked it for a few years. A friend of his traded him a ford truck and some cash. He drive it 400 miles and parked it in his garage for 15 years. I hired him and we were best friends and he worked for me 16 years. Started a project car but a bitter divorce dropped his enthusiasm. I can tell you more about if you want. It was T boned once but I spent big money getting her right. That's yours on the left circa 1988 next to my gsl

All the running gear on mine is from my gslse donor, except the engine. It's an aging pineapple engine with lapped side housings (yuck). It smokes on decel because of it. Great compression, and it tore up US129, but it's about to get a goopy semi p port.

totally incredible. Great thread! Lol

My name is Derek btw, but I might know the Curtis you mentioned lol

Well it ended up in the right place. The p port will make it sing and brap with the best of em!! These are the kind of rotary stories that make it all cool and satisfying. I'm just glad it got finished. The wide body kit was Air Buni brand jfyi. No longer available so don't smash it up!!

This is good stuff, has some limitations. Would recommend a 50/50 fill of good quality coolant for first fill, make sure no leaks, road test etc and if all good switch it over later if after a time everything is fine. Cost is a little high in event of a mistake/leak to replace.

Have had a lot going on in last year, not all car related. Did lose a lot of time dealing with insurance co. Lost my spot in line at my friends' shop because of it. His shop is busy,he does a lot of body/paint repairs on high end cars for several local dealerships as well as restorations. Have not found anyone better & trust him to do all paintwork on motorcycles i restore. Have waited to get back in rotation for my car for awhile as i don't want him to feel pressure to rush-he knows what i want,we've worked together a long time.

good advice. That's why you're a real mechanic and I'm learning to be one. I'm just a lowly tool and die maker!! Lol
the part Evans talks about no steam seems to make sense. Steam means hotter, has oxygen which equals oxidation. Imho that equates to water jackets eventually failing. Took off the old hoses and I'm pretty sure they were original. There's rust deposits around the spouts where the hoses came off. The tstat cover is particularly rusty. I'm going to emery it lightly then clean further w scotch brite. I'll paint outside with high temp and leave interior alone. I know I could get a new one but think I can salvage the original.

a good body man is always worth the wait. Never worth rushing them either.

Looks like one coil is a double and a single.(?) funny coil story.. two years ago Kenny discovered that years earlier the wrong coil was installed on mine. A standard coil if you will.. he researched and figured out that the proper coil for the SE changes from 9 volts to 12 volts where as the one on my car did not. Also a standard coil isn't made to handle the highest revs..I drove it that way for years. The difference was instantly noticeable.
Not certain what you're saying about your incorrect coil... what you're looking at is my version of DFI ignition,2nd gen coil fires leading, aftermarket TFI coil fires trailing thru leading ignition plug wire positions in distributor cap. Several reasons for this version, 1st don't want to drill or cut any holes in car to make mods that i want as if i ever want to return car to all original, don't want to have any extra holes as evidence something other than stock was there previously. Every modification done to the car is with this in mind. The bracket that you see that holds the coils & modules on back side you can't see when installed,i fabricated from aluminum, drilled, tapped and mounted everything you see to it bolts to same threaded inserts in left fenderwell that held oe ignition coil bracket. 2nd, though individual coils is best way to go,underhood area is at a premium on an SE when one wants to keep a/c and all else original AND don't want to drill/cut any more holes in car so.. after a lot of experimenting and testing of coils and modules i decided on what you see here. Ran well before with oe ignition, runs better now, seems to pull harder everywhere in rev range and definitely has more torque down low. Exhaust note is different too. Having removed all emission controls, this mod has cleared up exhaust smell also and while haven't had chance to put any real amount of miles on it,seems to be a tick better on fuel consumption.

THAT is a very interesting and unique mod. I've been all over the place in these forums I've yet to see that one. I'll have to check that one out more later. I still have air pump and all the pollution stuff. I'll definitely look harder at this one when I get passed all the stuff I'm doing now.

dlidfis.. I've seen that mentioned but didn't pay much attention. I thought it only referred to removal of the rats nest.

Mazda oe pump does NOT come with gasket. Mazdatrix part# for pump 15-130C-N232 & only one gasket #15-1160-N2Y0 needed.

Currently existing stock w air pump. We talked about this for an air pump delete and optional double pulley on water pump(?) which would be adjusted via the alternator adjustable bracket(?)
