85 GSL-SE / 93 Twin Turbo 13B Project

Hello,

My younger brother bought his first RX-7, he went with an 85 GSL-SE with the 13B, We got our hands on a built 93 twin Turbo 13B engine and decided to do the engine swap. I have had 7 RX-7's so I know my way around them but I have never messed with a Turbo rotary so I'm sure were going to have some questions. The first thing I see is the motor mount is at the front of the block on the 85 13B but at the rear of the block on the 93 13B. I am going to have to fabricate a new mount unless someone here knows a way around it.

Engine Specs:
Complete running swap just coming out of a 93 RX7, its a newer JDM motor with the Efini Y-Pipe and a few upgrades. It also includes the transmission, wiring and ECU

--35kilometer JDM Motor Converted to Non-Sequential correctly
--850cc Primaries and 1200cc Secondaries for running E85
--Complete Wiring harness and PFS Tuner with all instructions printed out in a binder a complete guide with a lot of extra information included (Also the Stock ECU)
--Custom AST Tank made for the setup that will be included.
--Light Weight Flywheel and Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch
--Custom Pulley made to delete the Air System
--3" Down Pipe
--Transmission with no issues at all 5 Speed Manual
--Modified Intake Manifold with the warm up secondary butterflys behind the Throttle Body in the Manifold removed.

Thanks and here are some pics of the car and Engine.

Nice, looks hot!

What is up with the BEHEMOTH on the left? Its completly dwarfing the already small 7. I dig both

Thanks, The black car is my project. It's a 1981 Camaro with a Chevy 540 Big Block, It should push 700 to 800 horsepower. It's a full rebuild turning her into a Pro Touring Camaro.

I am really wanting boost on my 7 (or my next seven hehe), and I'm considering going this route with the fuel injection. Although, I enjoy the simplisty (and price) of a blowthrough turbo set up.

At any rate I'll enjoy this one.

We got the old engine out and got the new turbo engine dropped in for a test fit. The placement looks good and still fits under the hood. Now we are coming up with a design for a rear engine mount and we'll get her in for good. I will try to get some pictures up tonight...

You can use the front cover off the old 13B on the RE engine. You can also use the oil pan.

not required, but will make mounting it a hell of a lot easier. there may be clearence issues, as well as more fabrication to make the rew rear iron mount work around the old school idler arm and center link steering bits. using the -se cover and pan make it a relatively strait forward affair re-using the OE mount location and having the pan clear steering and subframe areas

I just removed the original engine which I believe is a 13B RE? The new engine going in is a 13B Twin Turbo REW. I don't think the front cover is the same with these engine's, am I correct?

Alright... I will look into that thanks. Now as far as the drive shaft goes, I am assuming I will need a 93 yoke to fit my 85 drive shaft since the output shaft's are different?

you will need a custom shaft made to accommodate an FD trans and an FB diff in the same chassis. FD front yoke + shaft +FB rear yoke/flange. welcome to the world of 1st gens... everything is gonna be a custom job.

Maybe time to consider a ford 8.8" rear now? for the added safeguard and to prevent a need for 2 custom driveshafts in the end

Thanks, my brother (the one in the pictures) picked up the engine already Orange. He is doing some cleanup on the engine now and it should look pretty good sitting under the hood when complete.

OK QUESTION TIME!!!

The front housing from the original 13B looks like it will fit on the Turbo 13B engine but I notice the oil pumps on the right side of the front housings look different and mount different. Is this going to work? Also the Turbos engine looks like it has an oil line coming from the block and going into the Turbo... If I exchange the front covers from the non turbo block with the Turbo block won't this be an issue?

I am new to Turbos so thanks for any info.

For the oil line going into the front cover you have to tap or drill a hole into the FB front cover. I paid i think about $30 bucks for the job and it took them less than 2 hours to do it.

Is the oil line going directly into the turbos for cooling or just lubricating? Also under the turbos is a small "arm", is this for variable vane control?

Thanks

how is it going to be tuned? I thought you couldn't use the old 13b front cover with the REW block because the magnetic pickups wouldn't work in the old front cover.
