So its been awhile since an update so heres some new pics on whats happened in the past few months

One of the early decisions for the T2 swap is what to do about the tranny. I really wanted to keep the SA shifter position for the SA feel inside the car so I decided to keep the SA tansmission but get it rebuilt . Most of the thread search indicated it should handle the T2 fine if I dont launch it hard which I dont .

The teardown revealed the worn shifter fork common to the SA trannys and so new forks, bearings and syncros were ordered . The wear areas on the forks were about 2 mm deep . The forks were the old style bolt connector , not the later pinned forks . It was quite the adventure finding the right forks for the rebuild

The trans was put back together by a skilled tranny specialist who has shares some shop space where the car is being worked on. It has since been painted gun metal like the engine in the next few pics

The rebuilt 91 JDM T2 engine is assembled and now in the car. The next action will be getting the rest of the engine bay equipped. ....... and the new aluminum fuel tank Re-Speed is doing the prototype for it

heres the link on the current fuel tank Sam is building for the T2 swap

Looking good, nice job with the turbo oil drain. I forget, what are you running for engine management on this?

ourxseven 11-23-11 09:28 PM

sorry havent been on the forum for awhile .

The stock JDM S5 ecu and other equipment is going back in . The harness will be extended to fit . I am also having all the stock emissions equipment put back on it . I am expecting the stock HP will be more than enough to make this car a blast and still not smell like an old fuel drum

myfree7 11-23-11 10:30 PM

car looks great man... are you using the big brake kit from respeed?

ourxseven 11-24-11 04:18 PM

Thanks , no just staying with the stock 79 disc brakes up front and it has a GSL rear end for stock discs ( still an upgrade for '79 !!) on rear

Amen to that, plenty of power for a first gen, at least for me. Mine goes right through inspection too which is a plus!

A little update and a sneak peak at the first ReSpeed custom tank with an internal baffle for fuel starvation protection. This is the aluminum tank Sam is working on using my SA T2 swap project as the prototype. Now that guy can weld !!!!

Looks awesome . :icon_tup::icon_tup::icon_tup: Heres three shots of the finished product .

Here's a couple after he pressure tested it and I asked him to coat it. Prefer to keep the custom tank a little secret back there :egrin:.

Sam is now working on the straps to mount it in the car.

Heres the initial thread link that was following the ReSpeed custom tank design

after some initial trouble finding a donor caliper and brackets, finally found two from apexauto parts on ebay. Pretty good seller for used first gen parts . A few of his parts are on this car

now cleaned up and mounted .

Clean build :D. Awesome work.

When I first got the idea to build this '79 with "some Show-and-a-little more-Go", I wanted to bring back a little excitement of getting my license and the look of my first car which was a '73 Nova . To me any car that was built in the 70's is fair game to have a little Chrome on it and the most obvious chrome on a 70's car is the bumpers.

I always wondered whether the steel bumpers on the SA had early plans to be chromed, but got axed in the design department to be painted as the trend for the 80's .

In keeping with my plan to reinforce that it is still a 70's car , I have doubled its horsepower, and am adding some of the chrome accents to this black beauty it may have originally intended to have.

I know the idea of Chrome on a seven is :icon_tdow for most , but I think this is going to really look right when its done . The bumper project work had a few steps to it and some pics of it are next .

What really started all this was I found a listing for Chrome 1979 front bumper on ebay in Pennsylvania a couple years ago for 100$. Didnt believe it , or think I would ever use it but bought it anyway . It showed up and WOW !!! , it was amazing . It needed shocks , end pieces and front rubber strip to make it complete though.

This was the first step in getting it ready for the project

I then found a spare rear SA bumper and dismantled it to get new rubber and parts for . I also found a place in Winnipeg that specialized in chroming bumpers and gave them the old rear to work on

The new rub strips were bought from Mazda ( expensive !!) and assembled. I rust painted the bare metal inside the rubber strip . This is what the strips , inner metal bracket and clips look like

OK , now let the flaming begin ..... Here are the chromed front and rear SA bumpers that are going back on the car .

The mirror finish is perfect and the chrome is as smooth as a .............
