79 Aurora White to Black T2 Project Car

Its winter again up here in the Great White North but its going to be fun getting the SA I bought a couple years ago into full project mode .

I am going to start this new build thread on the project to date and progress over the next few months .

As a starting point , heres a couple shots of the car . It started its life an Aurora White '79 with an 11/78 build date ( has the right hand hood prop rod) and sunroof. VIN 521396

I paid $600 for it in the spring of 2009. It had a rust free body and the previous owner had swapped in a red GSL interior , GSL diff and GSL rebuilt 12A. The stock suspension and rebuilt 12A went into my '79 Limited which had a badly smoking 12A. and sold the Limited for $2800 this fall. My Re-speed suspension on Limited was removed for this project and kept the GSL diff.

I also sold the swapped red leather seats from it for $300, a RB header for $200 and a brand new alterator for $100 . So I actually ended up paying net of 0$ for it  and have $2800 from the Limited to get things going.:icon_tup:

I am going to have some fun with this project and do whatever to the car I want. With the Limited I felt obliged to keep it totally origonal , which is how I sold and it should stay. In the end I wanted to have a "custom" '79 . And this car is definately going have a few changes made to it.

The gold Cheviot rims in the pictures I gave to my father in law for his Blue 84 GSL he is fixing up.

So here we go

"Betty" has been stripped and is on the rotisserie getting ready for new paint over christmas . An old friend, Ike, who painted my Limited and an old '85 Cutlass is doing the work as a side job for cash . Ike works in a local mazda body shop during the day. Almost no body work is needed on the shell.

The paint is going to be a 2 stage water-based BASF base BLACK with clear. The rockers are going to have stone guard as well as the lower engine bay . Interior currently is coated with POR15 from the previos owner.

If you look close , Joe , the guy pointing at his face "I'm Joe" in the second picture is the rotary wizard who will be doing the T2 swap work. Great guy ( and Dan) who did the nice work on my 89 Vert. See below for that project.

Nice. I am going to be watching this. It helps motivate me to go work on my SA.

Where did you get the mud flaps?

Mud flaps are brand new and came from Phils Rotary in Australia. They have an ebay store that has some pretty interesting RX parts on it . You should check it out.

Neat thread. Will watch with interest. You pulling the fr. suspension for the re-spray? Presume the eng comp is getting painted too? Brave man going with Black. Looks grand when spotless but shows every swirl, scratch and dust particle...
best of luck on the project. off to a good start-

Yes , Stu nothing but the shell is getting painted , everything underneath removed . Th engine bay will be all fresh Darth Vader black

I hear you about the Black being a fussy colour to deal with . I have owned 4 black vehicles . I will likley get this we sanded and detailed which does help with the marking . At least this has been my experience with y vert that had ir done. I get my Black Jeep professionally detailed every two years to get it fresh again .

That looks really good! I like the silver rewinds with the RWL tires, gives it a classic look.

Yea , it sure does

I forgot to get a shot of the Engine Bay. That shiny black hole looks awesome . The stock hood stickers got masked and saved perfect as well.

My god, that black is ultra glossy. That's exactly how I want to paint mine.

Thanks. The BASF paint and OEM / hardener / clear itself was over $800 but looks like it was worth it for the good stuff .

Those Black SA interior door panels your sending me will help a lot in the red to black interior swap . The panels were one of the last pieces missing except for the red headliner which I may paint with SEM while its still in place

Mr_Miles 01-30-11 10:18 AM

they haven't gotten there yet?! jesus, I'd have figured they'd have gotten there sometime mid last week.

The new ReSpeed rack is in and Respeed adjustable race springs and tokico blues front and rear .

I cant wait to feel the difference with the R&P and this setup. :)

ourxseven 03-28-11 03:57 PM

Miles , your panels did arrive , thanks .

Hopefully the upcoming shots may include a new ReSpeed Prototype SA gas tank with baffles and sump that Sam is going to work on . He has my old tank to work from . Who knows , this product could pusuade a few more to go T2 swap , or supercharger , if you really needed any coaxing .

I am also getting the SA tranny rebuilt with new bearings and synchros . Stay tuned for some pics of that effort.

New brakes next , then the engine
