After reading tons on the forum, asking questions and looking at old builds, I started doing soft mocks figuring out what and where things go. Ordered more odds and ends, like regulator gage, more hose lines clamps, Carter 4594 pump. And a pump relay kit to go direct from the battery. This goes to the brake booster vacuum, the smaller one that’s blocked off would go to the vacuum advance on the dizzy. (Not sure if I will use it but I’ll try it both ways. First with the advance off, then I’ll grab a T and try the vac advance. Brake booster line that goes into the big outlet.
With the fan clutches, have you tried the "broom test"? I only ask because the fan will always be rotating, just not *tightly* linked by the clutch when cool.
Good luck!
Yeah, all of them would blow air like a tornado even at idle, cold or warm. I tried the broom test and bristles went flying. Definitely didn't want to put the handle end in there!
It’s been a while for any updates so I wanted to get back at it and share what I’ve been up to. Went with a 70amp S4 alternator, plug and play easy install. As well as a Bonzai Racing Dual Belt Pulley and belt tensioner bracket. Bonzai Racing Dual Belt Pulley and belt tensioner bracket. After too many clutch fans that would spin tornadoes, i decided to move to electric. I went with a 16” 3000CFM Flex-A-Lite fan. Also used Spal fan mounting brackets (I used 5) also covered all the wireing with some plastic conduit covering. Makes everything look neat and new. I opted for an easy electronics solution, Davies Craig Digital Thermo Switch. Mounted it to the drivers side strut tower with some heavy duty Command Strips for now.
The fan has went on about twice in a month or so just after some hot day stop and go traffic. The beefy radiator and air cooling at crusing speeds do most of the heavy lifting. I have it set to start cooling at 185 Degrees. Simple set up too!
I installed the full Racing Beat Street Port exhaust system. This mod, paired with the electric fan yielded the most ‘Seat HP’ increase. Acceleration feel is more responsive, I get to the power band quicker, little more top end power and it definitely feels more alive. Definitely worth it! While I was under here I removed the non-function AC system. I’m keeping all the parts just in case.
How do you like the sound of the racing beat exhaust?
Overall I dig it, I really like the performance it brought paired with the electric fan upgrade.
Sound wise I like it 85% of the time. Under 4k in any gear sounds perfect just enough low end growl. It gets higher pitched, race car sounding when you really step on it for passing, and past 6k it gets just a bit tinny sounding for my liking. The other 15% of the time I wonder what a different muffler would sound like, particularly one the retains a lower growl for a longer amount of time up the rev range.
I know no matter what I change it will eventually get that tinny higher pitch whine closer to redline. But maybe someone has a suggestion for a lower growl, for a longer time?
People say that the sound of the RB muffler will change as it "breaks in", getting less tinny sounding.
Also I noticed you might have a set of the recalled harbor freight jacks, the grey Daytona ones. You should check out this PDF for sure, for each of the styles of jack stands that you have.
It’s been a while since my last update, but I’ve been wrenching away. Recently did a full brake job and replaced as much as i could while down there.
Replaced the front calipers, pads, and rotors. Along with the front wheel bearings and seals.
Rear drums, shoes, wheel cylinders. Painted the backside of the drum cover black.
Did steel braided brake lines all around, new master cylinder.
Also replaced the Clutch master and slave cylinder, clutch hose line.
Man what a night and day difference. The old passenger wheel cylinder was leaking all over the place when I pulled the old drums, glad to have caught it before something bad happened.
Take the fill plug out first (top hole) then unscrew the bottom plug. I used 2 quarts Used 2 quarts of Redline MT-90 in the transmission Used about 1.3 quarts of Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90 in the differential Handy pump for the trans fluid, Amazon find.
I decided to dress up the engine bay a little, covered up any electrical wire with this plastic conduit covering stuff. Just ordered a bunch of sizes in 10ft rolls and went to town. Definitely like how it turned out, cleaned up the look without having to remove all the crusty tape, redoing all the wires and 40yr old connectors.
Decided to paint up the radiator top cover. Sand > prime > sand > paint. Also did the same for the Oil catch can. Adds a little splash of color.
Also stoked to finally get this Cusco strut tower bar from Japan. It just fits with the stock carb, and Bonzai alternator bracket. (Lightly rests on the bracket).
