Clamping it to the engine likely will not prevent it. The material is rather thin and the cover is not an even thickness. You would need some kind of heat sink AND have it clamped evenly. I just don't see it being very successful.
I'm guessing you are going for the REW cover for the CAS mounts, but you would be better off using the 12A cover, getting a FFE trigger set, and tapping the lower corner of the cover for your oil drain. The front mounted covers are designed to handle the load of weight and have some more rigidity than the other covers. Welding mounts may or may not be successful.

I wouldn't waste your time. You already have a Haltech, so you can literally use any trigger type. Either find an FC CAS and wire it in, or go with the FFE setup. The harness length as it sits may, or may not fit the FB well, so you will have to do wiring anyway. Wiring is not difficult, just tedious. Do it right the first time. Just be aware that any CAS you use, except for an FFE setup, will be susceptible to EMS noise, so the wires must be shielded. Any CAS wire should be shielded, but the FFE set is less affected by it provided you get the hall trigger style.
With any swap you have cost considerations, time considerations, and parts. Do not skimp on the parts in the early stages. You will end up fighting with it more early on.

do you have a link or rec for the ffe?? (Im really new to understanding all of this) trying to gather info but have read so many threads my mind is stumped haha.. Im a simple man..
I have a 12a cover, s5 CAS, 13bgslse pan.. just need to find an oil pickup or cut and weld mine when the time comes... should I order up the rx8 front gasket? anything else i may need?
the haltech was all wired into the FD pickups etc... so was thinking of trying to keep as much as possible.. but obviously its a put together install... so...

This kit is for the FC, but I would call them and talk about fitment. I am sure it should work.
I'm unsure about the pickup, you may just need a GSLSE, but I'm not sure.
The RX8 Front gasket is a good option, but I believe there is a hole that would end up getting filled on the front iron. I could be wrong, but I think you have to do that on the FC, but the FD has more front cover holes than the FD.
The haltech can easily be changed. Find the appropriate diagram in the Haltech subforum. There are multiple diagrams on how to wire it all in. For the FC CAS, just look at the wiring for the FC. You will really only need to change connectors and relocate the harness. It should be fairly easy.

thanks mate...
thing is they are either for the fc or fd covers...
no way to mount them to the 12a cover from what I see...
and I guess for that money I could make something myself being a machinist in a laboratory prototype workshop... just a matter of time.. I commute an hr to work so hanging out after makes for a long day haha

It mounts to the Air conditioning/power steering bracket holes on the cover, which has not changed since sometime in the 70s
Checked earlier in this thread. I posted a pic of a 12A cover on an REW. You will see that the mounting provision is identical to the FC 13B cover.

You would be better off with the FD pump, but you would need an FC water pump housing, water pump, thermostat, t-stat neck, water pump pulley, alternator pulley, and main hub pulley.
The FD pump is reverse rotation, so you cant use that smooth pulley on an FC pump.
