Then I got the engine to kiss the porsche transmission.
Then I stripped it down to bones.
Now its a stubby FD. Or rotary experiment (RX) 986.
Obviously I have a LOOOOOOOOT of body fitting and work ahead of me. A LOOOOT. So going forward all progress will be on this thread.
The old build thread covers a lot of the hiccups I had. Like the starter motor solution and making the adaptor itself. So do indulge my stupidity on that thread too for more in-depth coverage of the insanity.
I was following along with the other one. This project is pretty unique idea. I will try to keep up with this one, too.
Thanks, there is gonna be some back peddling for the next couple of months cause I speed through some stuff and cheaped out on other things. I really took a gamble on the adaptor plate even working, so the rotors in my engine are not so good, among other things.
Alright, back from DGRR. I didn't take any pictures of my car and I still haven't seen any pictures of my car at the meets, but I SWEAR I was up there.
Any who, I learned some stuff, and some of the assumptions I had were shown to me by more knowledgeable people.
One thing I learned is that when towing flat your tow bar HAS to be strait... or you cut tire. I figured the car would just trail the truck wherever.... I was wrong. Good thing I have crappy tires on the car right now.
Another thing I had assumed, but some guys up there who actually do this stuff for pay told me to add some more "triangles" to everything. This will be done. I was kinda planning on it, but they firmented the idea in my head.
BUUUUUT while I was up there I did pick up the rest of the stuff from RX7parts.com and I can now start mutilating the rear wheel arches.
If yall thought my FB used to sling rocks.... baby you ain't seen nothing yet. I love how the rear wheels stick out like they do.
Finally I have confirmed the rumors... 8.5 turbo twists fit on the front axle of the 986 platform. AND they solve my wheel fitment issues to boot.
Well thats all for now. I got a whole day off tomorrow. Lots of grinding and cutting to do.
Well, thats the wheel well. I don't know what else to do about the right side, its just gonna get body filler. I've said before I'm NOT a body guy. It'll look good to me, and thats all that matters.
I do plan on using some side skirts to make the "terrible" go away on the rocker area. The wheelbase is almost the same on the 986 so side skirts should work.
I gots the ADHD so I'm gonna go ahead and shift gears and take care of some of the chassis stuff that the guys from Florida told me about. I kinda wanted to do what they were saying anyway, but they totally solidified the idea in my head.
Got the frunk sorted.... Wait is it still called the frunk? I mean there isn't any storage up there anymore; its just the area in front of the driver. Oh well whatever its finished somewhat now.
I added a bit of structure to those front towers. And I changed the color.
Originally the plan was a "787" kinda color scheme, but now that I'm doing montego blue, a white chassis doesn't make much sense. I think the dark grey will hide and blend with montego blue. We will see.
Well I got my side skirts. They are how I plan to cover up the "terrible". Looks like they are gonna do just fine. Its amazing that the wheel base is identical on the RX7 and the 986.
Looks like I got hella triming to do.
These things are made out of some wild stuff. FRP, fiberglass reinforced plastic (polymer), its light as hell and looks like its pretty strong for what it is.
All of this is gettting glassed into the body work.
I got to play with glass... I haven't laid glass in decades. Not as bad as I remember.
I welded in the panels as best I could, but the little gaps needed glass to seal them.
Then I painted. Thats two sections of interior paint down. Just gotta clean up the engine bay and paint that; then we're off to do body work and final paint.
The A/C I've got planed for this machine is a 10 000 BTU unit.... I think it might be overkill, but I'll be cold thats for sure!!!
Holy S#%T dude wow! Just went next level with the build. Cannot wait to see this thing running!
Next level you say???
And she does/did run and drive. I just reused a bunch of stuff I knew I shouldn't have reused when I built the engine. I had doubts on the adaptor plate. Now I don't doubt it; so I'll use new rotors and good parts this rebuild. But yeah, it'll REALLY run soon LOL
Great progress!!! I did a cool video of me tlaking about your car at DGRR. You were there standing by your car at the Damn.
This is the link and I hope you enjoy it.
