The Return of a Retired Formula Drift Rx-7 Chassis
We are bringing back an old Formula Drift chassis to life for the 2011 SEMA Show. Strap in and watch the mayhem as we get this car together in the next week. Thanks to the help of the guys at http://www.wreckedmagazine.com we have been getting things going without a hitch.
Here is what the car looked like when we bought it about 50 days ago.
The car ran a three rotor in Formula Drift for the 2010 season driven by Jeff Jones seen here battling a Mazda Rx-8.
After inspecting the car in the first days of building we wanted a fresh start with the whole car so we took it down to literally a bare shell.
After tons of debating in the office we finally landed on doing a 2JZ-GTE swap into the Mazda Rx-7. It was pretty cost effective compared to options like a 3-Rotor (which had already been in the car) and it was a power plant we all loved. That blue car in the back is another one of our SEMA 2011 projects which you can check out at veloster.org (link goes to our build thread).
Here is the 2JZ beast ready to go in the Rx-7.
We called on Tech 2 Motorsports to help us get the 2JZ engine in our FD Rx-7. They make the swap super simple and virtually bolt-in with this great kit. Here is our front crossmembers (the close one is the home built 3 Rotor that was installed in the car before and the far one is the Tech 2 Swap Kit).
Here is a close up of the Tech 2 piece.
