Fun RX7 Build

This is my 1994 Chaste White 5 Speed RX7 that i bought late last year. I had been looking for this car for a little while and found it at a dealer in Chicago. It was supposed to be in perfect condition with 31k miles. I jumped on it and probably overpaid but I got what i wanted.

I quickly discovered that despite the dealers assurance that the car was in great mechanical condition, the second turbo wouldnt kick in and that the speedo, tach and digital gauge died intermittently.

After a lot of reading of this forum, i figured out the rats nest was too complicated for me and that i would send it to a shop. I debated between two different Florida shops but after talking to Mike @ Full Detail, i could tell he had the passion for these cars. We came up with a gameplan, fix the boost issue, install a fuel pump, swap to the 99 y pipe which i had powder coated, delete the airpump, install an Power FC and tune it. He was great to work with and the car ended up putting down 325 to the wheels when its cool. Once the stock intercooler heats up, power drops off hard.

Now that the boost was fixed, i sent the gauge cluster off to Michael Gagne in Canada to get fixed. He did a great job fixing it. Highly recommend him

I dont know how common it is but i had the dust cover for the keyhole break on my drivers door which blocked me from inserting a key into the door. I pulled the cylinder and had a local locksmith fix it but they installed the arm on backwards as shown below. It took me more time than Id care to admit to figure this out, the picture below is how its NOT supposed to go.

Now the car is in a pretty good place but the IAT's are way to high. Its around 60C driving around and jumps up into the 70's during a modest pull. Ive got a V mount ordered. Also ordered/ waiting on a set of Sakebombs RX+ rims, Carbon Fiber wing insert from ZK Motoring and a RE Amemiya catback.

I dont have any power goals or track times in mind, I just want a fun car. It does need some more power up top.

Thumbs up Clean!

Nice CW FD! look forward to seeing more updates.
Which v-mount did you go with? The Greddy v-mount is a great option.

Today was a good day. Got the RE catback in the mail. For anyone wanting one, i ordered it from Nengun and shipping was expensive but since there wasnt an alternative, i bit the bullet and paid the $500. It shipped out yesterday and i got it today so i did overnight parts from Japan!!!

I havent gotten to drive it yet due to the rain but it is lighter than the Racing Beats, its one piece vs two and the bends are slightly different.

My wife always comments on how fast things come from Japan. Usually only takes a day or two......but if we order something from one state over it can take 4 days sometimes.....

I remember being interested in this car as well. Glad its in good hands and you are sorting through the issues.

Looking good! That intercooler should make a huge difference over stock. Maybe consider adding the AEM water injection. I have mine installed in the elbow and use it to help lower the charge temps further, but mostly to keep the motor clean.

yes, a light coat. AMS did some testing on the effect of powder coating on intercoolers and didn’t find a statically significant difference between coated and raw

I've done the same. My powder coating guy has a "heat dispersing" coating that seems to work well. For a lot of the cars that I've had done, customers (or the wife) want their tanks polished so I just have the fins done.

The RX7 was shipped out to our good friends at FD Auto for the next round of upgrades. The first round was to get the basics done and this round was to make the car run cooler. It never overheated, the IAT's where just not to my liking. As is usual, Mike has put out a few videos to go over the mods.

Really cool. I've been following these vids on youtube, so cool to find your build here!

Seems like your car is in good hands. Excited to see how it turns out!

Finally got a shipping notice on my rims. Only took a little over a year to get them.

Thanks for the updates. It's such a beautiful car, looking forward to the build videos.

I too ordered Sakebomb RZ wheels over a year ago and have heard nothing, glad you got a shipping notice at least.....

At first I thought the shipping email was spam. Look for an email from “manual orders”. The only reference in it was the order number
