FD Down under - Single Turbo
Hi Guys,
I have just started my new build, i have started with stripping the required parts out the engine bay and doing some general clean up and paint respray. My current build is a little unknown to me in some respects as i am pretty new to all of this, even though i have had my car for 5 years all i have done is take it for a drive the odd weekend and have it serviced. I am now committed to learning more about the FD and getting my hands dirty. My current setup is pulling 270rwhp @12psi boost, this was on a dynamics dyno, i state this because i have read this particular dyno reads low results. My plan is 450rwhp @ 18psi boost, im aware this not an over night job, below i have listed current mods, then further on what i am planning, any advice is welcome and requested, i am planning to track this car, not for drag use. I also have allot of question, i mean allot!!! Current Mods please assume if not listed its still stock Stock turbos - non sequential setup FMIC Custom - pics attached Dual Oil coolers - fins are damaged badly Koyo Radiator Greddy intake elbow Light Weight Pulleys Removed CAT 3" Exhaust system - brand unknown, please tell me if you know Power FC HKS twin intake filters Planned Mods in addition or replace the above TDX61R Single turbo kit - from Turblown Aeromotive fuel pump - fom Turblown Aeromotive FPR - from Turblown Injector Dynamics ID20000 - from Turblown AEM water injection kit - from Turblown AEM smart coils - from Turblown So that's all i have committed to at this stage, as mentioned i am after your advice and suggestions. I have been looking at the following,but now sure if its required and more a luxury, any opinions? Diff brace - Banzai racing Transmission cross member - Brazai racing Fuel rails - FFE Spark wires - Sake Bomb Garage Sleek headlight - Re-amemiya, because i want them bad!! What else is there? im aware i need to upgrade the brakes on my model but not sure where to start, i have plenty of reading to do on the forum. I will post more as i can. |

This is a few pics of what Turblown is supplying as a kit.
Few extracts from Turblown: I went for a 1.0 turbine a/r The 1.0 turbine a/r provides 300rpms faster response than the 1.15 turbine a/r. Above 20psi however the 1.0 will start to slightly choke the engine above 6500rpms, and this is where we recommend the 1.15 a/r. Everything is a give and a a take, the 1.0 is the best balance for this turbo. The turbo manifold is a T4 Twin Scroll unit made from 304SS 0.140" wall pipe. It is backpurged and Tig welded with a lifetime warranty. The wastegtes are twin TurboSmart Comp40 Wastegates, comes with 1 bar springs and black by default. Two 304SS open dump tubes are also included. The downpipe is a 3.5" Vband 304SS back-purged piece with a single o2 bung/plug. The oil & coolant feed/return lines are hard-lined( see attached picture from a previous turbo system). The turbo is our TDX61R in journal bearing form( street turbo kit comes standard in JB; completely rebuild able, both previously dyno attached dyno sheets were JB). This turbo carries a 1 year warranty from Garrett, it uses 100% Garrett parts except for the compressor wheel. It is built and balanced in the USA. The turbo features a 3" vband discharge, and a T4 1.0 divided turbine housing by default( recommend for the under 20psi). All the necessary hardware, and gaskets are included. 12 psi usually makes 360rwhp, 15 psi makes 420rwhp, 18 psi by 460rwhp, 22psi makes 500rwhp, and 26+psi makes 550rwhp. I have attached a dyno sheet @ 22psi. We don't dyno cars in the USA in BHP. All of our turbo kits fit RHD cars too. |
Just realised the other build threads are pretty full on and those guys know what they are doing, im really not attempting anything special here but in fairness i have never worked on a car before, but i guess you need to start somewhere, i do wish i could pull the motor out a do a while respray on the bay.
Is it worth upgrading my clutch at this stage? |
Yes, you will need an upgraded clutch. Especially if it is stock as I do not see one listed.

ACT Street/Strip Clutch Kit Seem well priced, though I notice everyone seems to go for a HKS setup |
ACT makes great clutches... never heard bad experiences with the street strip clutch kit.

Am i going to run into problems using the PFC for boost control? i have read a few threads most of which don't end with a conclusion or should i run a standalone. |

I have managed to touch up the paint in my engine bay, looks nice a shiny again :nod:
The steering rack is on my garage floor, i will be following the method shown on Flyin' Miata : Tech: 1.8 conversion. On a side note i went to my local garage to get a big tub of grease, i told them the plan with steering rack and they looked at me as if i was mad. I will get some more pictures this weekend. |

Just found some sad news, removed the spear wheel and there appears to be some nice air vents in the well... nice couple of rust holes :( Then I started with removing the fuel pump and the screws holding the stalk in the tank are rusted a ringed there's nothing for my screw drive to grab on to. Any suggestions... |
Penetrating spray and vice grips. I would use other methods, but i wont recommend them due to fuel being thrown in the mix.
Im curious why your sourcing the parts from the states when we have some excellent products down here built in Australia for Australian cars? Not having a dig at any US suppliers, as there are some parts from over there i have on my FD, just curious? As for boost control, I always run a separate controller on ANY ecu other than Autronic. Currently running a Turbosmart Eboost Street, but love the Greddy Profec B Spec II which i run on all my other cars. Get in contact with Drew from Direct Clutch Services for the FD clutch. Sir20B is his other known name. |
00ROTA - To be honest i find it really hard to find any parts on the net for the RX7 from Australian distributors, in Perth there is nothing. Also im using this forum as a source for my build and most parts discussed are from the US.
If you can suggest some manufactures here i would definitely get in ouch with them. I originally went to a rotary specialist here in Perth and they weren't to interested (think they where busy enough), so i thought instead of wasting my efforts trying to get a company motivated and interested (with my money) i will just attempt it myself. Thanks for your advice as well :) |
SDR make some awesome quality manifolds for $340. steampipe. I have been runninng one on my FD since i bought it. Turbosmart products including gate and FPR800 from Motorsport Connections. Injectors, fittings and lines can be sourced from there too, GTX35R from GCG, etc.
Alot of tried setups easily available here! Like i said, im not knocking any of the US suppliers, was simply curious. I know it can be difficult to find FD parts down here, but its very possible! I guess im lucky i work in the performance industry. If you need help sourcing parts locally, i may be able to assist. just shoot me a PM. James. |

Well from my experience I would say it is very reliable. Considering it is also modified 6 years of no issues, this is not my daily drive though.
This may seem like a contradiction to the above, when I first got the car my the AST failed, goodbye engine :( personally i think the parts around the engine are the unreliable thing.

Great news, using vice grips got those bloody screws out, time to replace the old pump with my new pump, supplied by Turblown, the Aeromotive Stealth.
Question for everyone, i know i have to upgrade the wiring including the wiring inside the tank between the plug and the pump, however is it ok to use the OEM plug? or does that become defunct? I have attached photo of the plug in question. |

Uh oh.. i seem to be missing the o ring?
Mazda OEM Fuel Pump O-Ring Pump to Pipe FD3S Is this required? i have the collar clip but no rubber ring? how has his been running fine? |

Nice setup! What do you plan to use for an oil return line from the turbo..

Turblown will be providing me with a complete kit which consists of solid lines so its going to look pretty bling :)

Hi,
Suggest you do two things: 1. Head over and join up to FDRX7.com - (Become verified too). I am a member there and it will put you in touch with a wealth of information and experts on the FD in Australia. Will also point you in the right direction for parts, etc. 2. Speak to a few more people before you de-power your rack. I know more than a few people who have done this to their FDs, only to re-instate as they lost alot of feel and didn't like the depowered rack at all. |
