CYM build by RE-Mamamia
First of all, my build is going to be a little embarrassing comparing to the other builds in this space...some of the builds here are simply amazing! Anyway, the CYM is my second FD as some of you may recognize my previous 94 Chaste White.
https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3349...d0d764d7a5.jpg Well, long story short, I blew that motor on the track, spent a gazillion $ rebuilding it and then sold it without documenting much of it's life. Now that I am back in the FD game, I'll simply use this space to document and share my experience with my second FD RX-7, 1993 R1 in CYM. The FD is neither my daily driver nor my weekend warrior - it is a car that embodies my love for sports cars in simpler forms; lightweight, agile, reasonable power and timeless styling. The goal is to keep it that way, beat it up on trackdays as much as I can, and admire it from time to time. Anyway, I would like to start this build thread with a video of my engine removal that we worked on last week. The engine was actually running very strong at only 56k miles with nothing leaking but I still wanted to refresh it and build it as reliable as possible so it won't share the same fate as my last FD. <iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/29905532?title=0&byline=0&portrait=0" width="398" height="299" frameborder="0" webkitAllowFullScreen allowFullScreen></iframe> Argh - can't embed Vimeo vids...anyone know how to do that? Here's the link - More to come :) |
Remember seeing your old FD once, great looking car. Looking forward to following this and living vicariously through you until I get my CYMs out west with me so I can start tearing into them as well :)
good luck with the build...

just received a call from swaintech that they can't coat my turbos and mani because i didn't properly take everything apart and it wasn't cleaned. They can't do anything so it's coming back to me. Boo. :(
good luck man, can't till I can tinker with my future FD!
While waiting for my engine to come back, various parts arrived this week. X'mas sure came early this year!!!
Seibon RE style CF hood. This will be painted CYM http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6115/...88ed328e_b.jpg Autoexe CF lip. Amazing quality...if you look close enough, you can actually see through it...unlike the hood above, no fiberglass overlay here! Nice looking build dude. Your White car looks great.
If you don't mind me asking where did you get the autoexe allotted from and how much? It looks beautiful and I would like one for my bumper. You can pm me if you like |
I think you should give me the lip and the hood :)
Looks great! Love those Advans.

I just ended up cleaning the stock turbos and manifold without thermal coating. |
Finally got the engine back and I have to say, Banzai Racing did a tremendous job. Not only did they communicate with me almost daily on the progress, Elaine and Chris responded to my emails within the hour. But the coolest part is that they documented the entire rebuild for me; from tear down to completion.
While they had the engine apart, i requested a street port and decided to strengthen the seals with 2mm RA Super seals. Here are pictures of the tear down - http://www.banzai-racing.com/2011_cu..._breakdown.htm and here are the rebuild pics and end result - http://www.banzai-racing.com/2011_cu...en_rebuild.htm |
Some photo updates -

However, not a good day today. Somehow, the power to my new 140amp alternator melted that caused the gauges to malfunction and stopped charging the battery. Good thing it happened 2 minutes before I pulled into the parking lot...given more time, it probably would have shorted a lot of things and cause an engine fire. Anyway, it totally sucks to be out of the car again :( |
Coming along. Hope you get the wiring issue addressed and back on the road.
So have you driven on those STANCE XR coilovers yet? I'm thinking about getting a set. Also wondering how those spring rates are for the street.
Looking good and awesome progress. Ive always been a fan/inspired by your white FD. Im liking where your CYM is going :)
Got a new post to the alternator and car finally broken in! I currently at Neptune Speed getting it tuned by Yoshi. I'll load up the result tonight...fingers crossed!
I feel lucky to live within an hour of Banzai, looks like they did an amazing job with your engine! And I absolutely love the rest of your build, that CF lip is so sexy. Can't wait to see the end result of this.
Excited to see the progress more excited the car has a great owner. I was fearful that someone would shred that car. The day you decide to sell that car drop me a line.
what treatment/finish is on the engine block? looks amazing!!
Where did you pick up the 140amp alternator?

It was originally setup to mirror your original build of the CYM with the RP01s let's see how closly it resemebles your existing build when he's done. I believe the new hood looks alot like yours.
Your old FD is one of the cleanest I've ever seen. Who ever bought that is one lucky bloke. Good luck on the new build. Looks promising. Hope you keep those Advans!

RCCAZ's CYM is definitely rockin' but my is gonna come out a little different with the body pieces i've got coming. Nothing crazy, pretty much everything you see here but with the wider front Feed fenders. still on the fence about getting the rear fenders but then it'll look pretty much like my white one. Anyway, i CANNOT wait to get my car repainted next month to refresh the CYM...I'll keep everyone updated ;)
yeah I agree. This is one of the cleanest FD. just love that color!

some updates from recent body work. The CYM screams for a new paint so it's getting a fresh paint job along with body pieces. The rear will be flared ala shineauto ken's car. I think it's still a few more weeks away from being finished...I can't wait!
