rx7 prices and newbie info.

right well first off id like to say im a 14 year old australian with too much time on his hands.

iv been into cars for a long time and i love rx7s, i dont know why i do its just like that.

i know rx7s are out of production at the moment and its going to be about 4 years till i can get one (dad says he will buy me one when i get into uni) and it will be my first car, my cousins are mechanics and they run their own bodykit/performance workshop.

what i want to know is, will i be able to purchase a rx-7 fd3 series 8 legally in australia (cant find any other info)? if i do get one, how much in your honest opinon would it put me back? i saw a series 6, black, 99 rear lights (i think) black, nice rims, a nice spolier stock engine for 34,000 australian. i think this is a good price for one.

so my question is will it be cheaper to buy now, or in 4 years or so.

well its all up to the condition of the car. of course in 4 more years every car will lose more value and lose more of its orginal condition. either you buy a MINT one right now and hang on to it until 4 more years later. or find someone 4 years later with a good condition rx7.
id say sait it out and do a good research on the car before you go ahead and buy one.
theres a lot to know and a lot to do
ask anyone with a fd...its no honda

Buy it later. The prices will probably come down then, and your money can be used for better things.

In fact, if you have a couple thousand, open an IRA and put the money there. It will help your credit and you'll have a really fat wad of money when you retire. I know it sound ridiculous, but you only have one chance to put money into savings early - $2k at age 14 grows faster by age 22 than most 22-yo's can manage to save. Just put it away now, and for the rest of your life you can put $2k less into retirement savings each year. That alone would pay for a lot of RX-7.

Plus, a 3rd gen is a very risky car for a new driver. You'll want to beat up something less exotic and dangerous for the first few years.

Dave

pssssssst, hush, hush!.To much info keep your hand close to your chest (not for everybody to know!).
You'll be in a better postion when ready to buy,not when everyone knows your hand(cashed up!).
Take the holden and thank your dad(what champ!)
Buy a house 4+ bedrooms,with good garage/workshop area,move in ,go to uni.
The orther 3bedrooms well I'm sure you find a few uni girls to pay rent, etc, etc, etc.
99% of girls are neat say no more!.
During uni or after you'll know what to do(which car ,etc)
After uni there should be X amount of disposable income to play with(go stupid on the project)
Just look at the big picture and set yourself up.
Cheers your old, old, uncle OLD RX-7

well i'm a 40 year old ex-aircraft engineer teaching english in japan. to get a break from the screaming kids and grammar i retreat to the garage and spend my hobby time fixing up FD rx7's for a year and then sending them to oz to sell

i actually don't drive them much as gas is so expensive and the traffic so bad it's easier to have more fun on big bore bikes

i keep photos of my current progress at this url

keep checking back and get back to me next year if you are still keen

One little thing being glossed over is the small matter of a turbo car whilst on your "P" plates in Australia...

The new rules just coming into force will prevent you owning a turbo RX7 until your on your full license. Hopefully this will let you live a bit longer (IE no matter how good you think you are 200kw is a bit too much power for a new driver!)

I would suggest getting your dad to buy a gen 1 RX7 now. A series 1-->3 with a stock 12a or 13b non turbo. Throw an exhaust on it, some nice suspension, a roll cage and decent tyres. Then run the 100kms up to wakefield park on a few open days. This will show you what a car can do, improve your driving greatly, and give you a chance of living to see your 19th birthday. Not to mention circuit racing is great fun!!
Then when you 20 (And on your full licence) you will have an appreciation for car dynamics, power and ability. Go and buy a RX7, or even an RX8 (Both have considerably more power than a gen 1 rx7) and have fun!!

I hope you can keep your resolve. Been reading up on alot of stuff about rotary engines. Had to start with the normal piston engines first though to understand the difference between a rotary and a piston driven motor. Its VERY TIRING, but interesting. Still all that is in theory only..... need hands on experience to be of any uese.
