Need help
Hello I just recently got my working holiday visa and am making my way over very soon from england I am planning on seeing how it goes but if all works well I would like to try and stay as a paint sprayer anyway here’s the problem.
I have 2 rx7's only one can come with me if I stay need help deciding which one to keep
1. Highly modified gen 1 1985 spent a lot of time and money but it’s now limited by the car it is (handling + power)
2. Stock gen 3 1992 which I just love the way they drive and look
I think the gen 3's cost a lot more than a gen 1 could ever be as far as I have seen and would be harder to replace (correct me if I am wrong)
But a lot of money has been spent here on the gen 1
Which would also be easier to get into the country?

I know that in Perth the FD would probably be the easier of the two to get road legal so you would be able to drive it over here.
If the first gen has been modified heaps, then it can be difficult to get licenced, not impossible, just difficult as they are changing the laws all the time and I think they recently brought in some new emmissons laws which is probably not going to help a modified rotary pass.
As much as I hate to say it, as I love modded first gens, but your probably safer bringing in the FD and then you can buy a cheap first gen when you get here and start all over again!
What mods have you done to the first gen exactly? It looks fairly stock in the photo's so you might get away with it...the main things they are gonna worry about are engine mods...brakes, suspension etc not so much.

the 1st gen would not be impossible to pass,,
there is many cheap wrecks here that would donate a stock carb and differntial ETC to make it get past OK
-- commonly done,, people will chuck back on the good stuff,, awaiting the next pull over
-- perth is not as red hot on this stuff as is brisbane!
the FD,, is fairly easily replaced here,, we had them locally,,
and we had grey jap imports for a while
( now only s8's are allowed in grey )
-- but i expect it can get a much better $ if sold in england ,, and replaced here easily enough
if you are a car spray painter,, then work should not be difficult to come across
-- indeed i know a couple of irishmen that pull off a summer / winter working holiday thing regularly
however,, if industrial ,, or domestic,,
- the work is tapering down,, as most of the work here ( perth ) was mining construction
( though perth is not suffering as bad as other parts of aus,, or world )

You could get the 1st-gen in under the formerly known as “15 year rule” with next to no modification. Cars brought in under this rule are exempt from many recently imposed regulations.
Out of curiosity, how do you plan to get the FD on the road legally? I cannot see an obvious importing rule that would allow you to bring it in for road use. One of the other guys may know of a way but I don’t see one.

I don't know still trying to work out the rules it’s so different to here almost anything is allowed in.
So I would not be able to bring the FD over to use on the road but should be able to get the 1985 fb in under the 15 year rule I have heard a bit about the 15 year rule
The fb has FD brake servo FC hubs and custom suspension from early post will this be a problem
How much can you pick up a 1992 rx7 FD for??

Rotary Freak
If the intention is to be a permanent resident, should be able to bring 1 car in....as to whether importing either car would be worth it, once transport, inspection, etc is factored in, got my doubts.
Early registerable FDs can be had for mid to high teens locally, say 8-9k quid, with somewhat more for good examples.
The early rx7, excepting the weber/gilmer, would seem fairly mild in what gets around locally and there seems to be more latitude with personal imports.
If you can get a word in between whinges about Perth driving standards, Pistonheads in the Oz section have a number of ex-pats who've done exactly what you're proposing, so info there might get you a reasonable idea.
