I'm pretty certain the first FD I saw on australian roads was silver - though it may have been a very early import. I'd be (pleasantly) surprised to hear there are no black oz FDs - I guess the ones I've seen could have been MBs or imports.

Its an Innocent Mica Blue one. Was only there for a while. I test drove 2 others however found this one to be the most original and stock. It's a 2001 as well, not 99. mmmm, white guages!

yeah, same pic as my avatar here, actually

black 93 (II) type r, now has about 53k km, factory bbs rims, trust cat-back, hks dp, hks earthing, splitfire leads, rmagic torque brace, datasytems ttimer (which I primarily use as a voltmeter), defi boost gauge, kenwood head unit, white indicators, s7 lights, feed gknob, feed 'cf' door handles, momo steering wheel, and the latest addition, a mazdaspeed type II wing. Boost controller is next as I'm getting 14psi spikes

I had big plans but ended up buying a forester instead (now no mod money) :p

Cool, good looking car. Looks RZish with the wheels.

Mines also a Type R, 93 (pretty sure) But a type 1 (yellow Foglights, diff tach, rubber surface on panels....not any more though!!) My bro went to Japan last year and got me a boss Kit and a spacer kit. But even with this on my Momo Race wheel, the ends of my hands would hit the light/washer stalks and i could only see half the guages. Efini wheel back on now. Do you have this problem????

I got mine done at the local autobacs and we tried a couple of spacers before I was happy with it - the first one definitely was a knuckle-grazer

bad pic (phone camera), but...

type III is the first of the s7's - so there are a range of differences (which get a bit blurred with the oz-specs)

type I were oct 91 - aug 93, they are quite a different beast - they were the most expensive FDs ever (even more expensive than the spirit r, 11 years later...). The seats are 100% real leather, they have a better bose audio system, the interior plastics are different, had different gauges, chrome rings around the gauges (a nice touch that was later brought back), interior door handles had a dimpled finish... probably lots of other little things

but which one is better?

well, an update model is always a better thing - some of the initial niggles and issues get sorted out. There are quite a few suspension changes in the II...

They're both outshined by an s7, and very much so by an s8

always get the latest model you can afford!

DaiOni - does this mean I've finally convinced you that the type 1 wasn't the best? We got a wierd type 2 here - 12-9-10 boost pattern. I don't think anyone else got that. Fuel cut curve is higher too.
Bad news I'm afraid on the colours , the 1993 series 6 OZ colours were:
VR,MB,BB. In about 95 PW and SS got added (on special order only in 95 I think). BB was ditched around then too. I've seen a few BB FD's and Fooboy off ausrotary has an oz-delivered 1993 Black FD. All the silver 93's I've seen were PI's. I've got a series 7 brochure and the colour was definitely gone by then.

I had a momo race wheel on my last FD. could only read the speedo between 40 and 60 and it was bloody tiresome on long drives, but it did make the car feel more responsive on the track.

I dunno which Type my car is....mine is a 93 model apparently....twin oil coolers..its a personal import from japan...so its an efini. The fog lights standard are yellow colour. Its has got suede seats. Chrome around the gauages. Of course 0-180km/hr speedometer...It has got a red engine brace..with RX7 on it..
It has got the chrome door plates taht says RX7. ...It has got no bose system.....no sunroof.....The bonnet is made from aluminium (very light) twin turbo...what else? Efini steering wheel...no airbag....got ABS......has rear wiper for the hatch.....does anyone know from this?
It is silver in colour....leather or vinyl rear seats? but suede in front. Has cross drilled peddles...that has Rx7 on it too...

I was wondering why do jap FD's have rear seats??? Is it for insurance purposes?
Also, do the S8's have them?

And...what does "efini" actually mean? Is it only the jap FD's called efini?

SevenHeaven - you have a type 1.
Mavrick Efini is only a play on the word infinity. It just rolls off the tongue easier. Nothing more than that. That's why the badges are a sort of squashed infinity symbol.

"does this mean I've finally convinced you that the type 1 wasn't the best?"

no, no - I'm pretty sure I never said type I was the best. IIRC, I said it is the 'best quality' - in terms of materials used (and of course, $$$ doesn't mean they have stood the test of time). Type I = most expensive, but not best!

"We got a wierd type 2 here - 12-9-10 boost pattern."

Mine has a pretty similar pattern - I thought it was a problem (it's not...?). I've never been able to find any data in japanese that shows the patterns

"Fooboy off ausrotary has an oz-delivered 1993 Black FD."

I actually thought his was MB. But yeah - I'm sure I've seen more than a couple of oz-specs in BB.

"I had a momo race wheel on my last FD. could only read the speedo between 40 and 60"

I know the size of wheel you had - I looked at that one too - but went for one that was 0.5" bigger - no issues at all

Efini was a sub-brand for mazda. They've had a few - eunos and autozam for example. Some mazda dealerships were authorized efini dealers (kinda like HSV/holden dealerships in oz). However - there were a variety of cars that were badged 'efini', including the MPV (people-mover) - so it isn't an FD, or 'sports' brand at all.

SevenHeaven: yeah, type I. From the list you wrote, the only things I don't have are the yellow spotties (mine are white) and chrome rings. Mine actually came with a bose system - but that was the first thing to go. According to the references I have, the type I's were the only cars to have genuine leather. We've discussed this before, and I think the consensus is that this doesn't include the rears - which have probably always been that horrid vinyl. And why do they have rears? Because they do. And... some do, some don't - it depends on spec

I'd never put 19s on. To be honest, I don't think you can go past 17s as an all-round performance size - not too many people want to hear that though.

I'd stick to 17" for performance. For looks I'd get 18" and wouldn't even consider 19"!

I personally would get 18" 2or 3 peice jap rims 17" x 8.5 Front & 17" x 10 Rear. For tyres, either 245/40 front and 265/40 rear or 225/45 front and 275/35 rear.

IM actually looking for a set of OEM S7/S8 17/8 17/8.5 wheels in the 5 spoke design. Sort of keep it stock looking but better.

Another easy way (and how i worked out your spec) is that the markings on the tacho's are differnet. Type II has at least half as many as Type 1. Interior plastics were also fixed to the grainy surface.

Question: Aussie S6's only came as Type 1's? And then got the changes with typeIII (S7)

He he, i figured out that our AUS cars are Type X's with 2 oil coolers, no rear seats, no climate control, fog lights, strut brace etc.

yeah I was thinking 18"s just from the cost point of view...some 19"s i have seen are not badly priced...2500...approx...while 18" i have seen a nice set with tyres for 1600 or so....

I like the standard rims too. I have got Falken Azenas? dunno if thats the spellin...semi race tyres...and they are great... cost heaps though...dun think i can get the 18" version of them without chopping a leg off.

For a decent set of LIGHT rims you will be looking at $3000 upwards. $1600 with tyres would be a load of **** quality and weigh 30kg per wheel. If you can afford it, volks, buddy clubs, advan racing, etc are all good brands. Please don't get crome shiny rims either!

haHAHA....i am looking at...5 or 7 spoke rims.....dun want the mesh type...so @#$@# to clean...just something easy to clean. I love the R34 GTR standard wheeks....that type of wheel...maybe i will source a set of R34 GTR wheels....should fit....and they are 18" and very light weight..

I like the colour on them too..
