Ken By FarThe Coolest Thing We Saw The coveted "By-Far-The-Coolest-Thing-We-Saw-At-SEMA" awardgoes to AEM's new programmable Engine Management System. Poor tuning is by far the most common problem, and is ultimately the cause of the majority of catastrophic engin failures. Stand-alone engine management systems are almost always the best answer, but wiring, learning the software, and the daunting task of building your first map keep most people away. EMS's system willl be available in a variety of plug-in-play models that use the stock harness and stock sensors. Base mapswill also be available for all cars with this plug-in feature. If they don't make a plug-in model for your car, the same ECU is available with a generic harness that you can trim to fit. AEM's system is unbelievably flexible. While most systems require certain kinds of sensors, or can only drive certain kinds of injectors, the AEM system will take any input you want and give any output you specify, 60-tooth crank, four-tooth cam trigger, staged injectors, it all works. We brought a pack of five grumpy, hung-over techno geeks to AEM to find the systems' weak points and came up empty-handed. The only thing it couldn't do was run on Jacquot's new G4 titanium Laptop. This system will be running at least one of our project cars soon. |
i have a 93 automatic and i need an ecu. mods are intake, dp, and exhaust. i dont know much about tuning so should i go with the aem or do you have any other suggestions.

ok is it out yet???? and I have an fc so need the race version. but I want the MAP for the fd.. how can I get the map for this.. would some one be willing to upload there fd map so I can download it????
Latest report I have is late February/early March for all versions and there are a lot of cars supported with the plug & play. My gut feel is this is going to be a biggy for import racers, Honda, Supra, RX-7s etc. Then again what do I know. Just a feel I have.

I know it comes with a base map for the FD. I have a single turbo FD w/ the 1600cc injector secondaries. Will it be easy to tune for those mods?(FMIC, no cat, fuel pump, etc...)
My gut feel is once AEM is able to deliver these ECUs there will be many shipped. I am pleased to see that this is supported by windows and we have technical support in the USA. This looks like a very full-functioned complex hardware and software. My concern is will AEM be staffed properly with competent technical support to support all these units that will be sold shortly. KDR tells me they will be going to a "install and tuning" seminar for this ECU. I was wondering if there is any other training available other than a seminar, maybe a self-study course using software or a video tape etc. Nobody wants to install a state-of-the-art ECU and mis-program it and blow their motor. This would not be good for them or the reputation of the ECU manufacturer. My main concern is getting it programmed correctly with all the fail-safe features to help eliminating the chance of blowing my motor again.

Any info on it's arrival date yet?

In this months Turbo, there is a great write up on the AEM. Maybe I'll scan it and post it later. Or maybe some one else could.

ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL?
I heard that it was pushed back again and that the Supra unit will be out first. No confirmed date yet.

I don't understand that part of business. Supra's want (i.e. 5000 items) Rx7's want (4000 items), is it that hard to press enter on their computer to start the production process? Are there any bugs they're still working out?
As you know, the RX7 is a has non standard type of firing, fueling, and accessories. This is why the Supra was done first, it is more common with conventional EFI operation. The RX7 has other things that need added to work all of the factory stuff properly (I.E. Oil Metering Pump). So, it will follow Supra (closedly behind). If all is well they should be available mid March time frame.

From what I know, at this time AEM's current plan is to only have the seminars. AEM is expecting the seller of the AEM units to support on installs and tuning issues. It's the same way with Haltech, that's why they are worried about big GB because they are unsure if the seller is capable of support the quantities of units they sell.
Just from what I heard. Tony S. |
So what's the verdict? Will we know how to tune the bastard after we buy it from Jason?
Will this unit be similar to the Power FC band wagon? Everyone does it theory. Can it do everything a Haltech can do? Power FC was limtied in some areas...
It is supposed to be better than the Power FC due to its datalogging capabilities and it can control a lot more things.
Tuning for race (i.e. big single turbo, 1600cc injectors, ignition system, etc.) is a different ball game for all EMS. That was the difference between the Haltech and Power FC. Will the AEM unit have problems tuning for race applications?
not at all download the software try it out it looks hard at first. but so does anything you have not seen before. it does have alot of features don't let it scare you though. make sure you go straght to the dyno to check everything out. Just remember it is better to be rich than lean..
I hope when you say rich you mean money-wise :D. Heheh.
