i'm looking at an ARC intake for my FD
does anyone have any thoughts on it
is it a good choice?

 

Several people on the forum have them, they seem to function well. One complaint I have seen is the difficulty in getting properly fitting filters. Overall I think it is a nice unit.

 

I have had one for 4 years and it works well. K&N filters for the Discovery Land Rover fit.

 

I'm pretty sure you'll have a tough time fitting an aftermarket stock-mount intercooler with that airbox...it's pretty wide.

 

I asked a friend the same question of the OP. He chirpily replied 'Made of win!' I think that comprehensively covers it. I'm going down the v-mount route though, so it wont fit with my plans.

 

the box will fit with a greddy smic and anything smaller.

why use the K&N filter and not the original ARC filter tho?

 

The ARC filters are like $100+ from what I've seen and they're hard to find. Apparently ARC also went out of business so it's not like there's much chance they'll get any easier to find / cheaper.

I went with a Wix filter (46798 Part Number) for the land rover like the others mentioned. I'm not sure if I got the exact right one since the length and width are correct but it's a little too thick. So I had to smush in a small section of it where the metal tube is inside the box. But $10 is better than $100 and they're easy to find at autozone or places like that.

 

Last time I heard, Arc was back in business and even had a new website.

It's aluminum...which we all know means horsepower. But why not just do a cheap bastard mod on the stock air box w/ an easy-to-find K & N?

 

I really liked mine. I bought it off a guy who made some custom ducting with CF and it fit perfectly with my stock IC. I was lucky enough to have two new ARC filters but I sold it to fund some other band aid patches on my FD. It's a solid box and sounds alright with a stock motor.

 

I'm running that box in my fd it's ok but you really need to make a duct for the bottom filter it sucks air from the radiator which is hott I made a duct to keep that from happening I think it's good for the 100 bucks I paid for it with two arc filters but I honestly wouldn't pay more then that for it just because you can do two cone filters on stock or aluminum pipe and have the same outcome maybe even better because ducting is easier hope this helps you make a choice

 

Just an update, I replaced the discovery filters because they were a little off-size (too thick) and looked like crap. I ordered the K&N (not my favorite filter due to reports of engine failures in rx8s using them) and it fits great:

$50 ea on amazon, so still pretty pricey, but at least you don't have to worry about tracking down replacement filters later.

 

Hairball, can you explain/show the ducting you did?

 

^Sorry but that looks stuffed in there. Doesn't look all that good either.

 

I made it outta thin aluminum and rivets it basically covers the back of the radiator it sorta blocks some of the hot air outta the radiator and might pull some fresh air from the bumper opening not real sure if it helps or not but then again that's what an intercooler is for and water injection is for lol
