20B - Where and how much?

Where can I buy a 20B engine? Any sites regarding swaps into second gen rx7's?

I think that Corksport has the best price, but just about any Japanese engine importer could get you one. You can sometimes get the 20B for half this price from private individuals who bought one, realized what it really costs to install, and then sell it for a loss.
http://www.corksport.com/

If you look in the upper right hand corner of this forum, you will notice a blue "Search" button. Click on that and search the 2Gen forum for "20B" and you will find lots of info.

This site covers most of the installation issues for a 2Gen.

The harness and ECU is worthless for an RX-7 because it will only work if you also have the stock JC Cosmo transmission and coil packs. If you are an electrical guru then maybe you could figure out a way to get the ECU to work without the transmission, but you would be the first person to do this successfully if you did. IMO the only useful harness part is the alternator plug, which I got at Discount Auto Parts for a few dollars.

the injector plugs are nice to have...
www.fc3s.org has 20b engines too
i actually found about 5 motors in my search.
one was 2k but dissassembled
2 were in japan
1 was on a boat
corsport has them
and fc3s.org had one
atkins had the whole front clip

the thing with the 20b stuff is you either need all of the electrics or none of it, i got lucky and mine had everything, but if i didn't have the coils its $3000 from mazda, so you would be better off with a haltech

pm me if you are still looking for an engine

Yes, that's a good point, assuming that they are in good shape of course.

Today I found out that the Motec M4 and M8 will run a 20B with the stock coil packs with very good results. I guess it is possible that other aftermarket EMS units could also do this, but I do not know of any.

Yes, I saw that diagram a long time ago, but figured that those were special race coils like on the Kudzu. Hehehe, I spent a lot of time trying to track down the Kudzu coils, only to find out that they are special production only. I never thought to look for stock JC Cosmo coils!

Oh well, it looks like I will just use some Blaster2 or motorcycle coils along with Bosch igniters. I'm still trying to find out what kind of ignition options are available with the new Wolf3D 4.0 EMS.

Yes, I have the Wolf3D 4.0 EMS, wiring harness, manuals, memory chip, and I finally got my software two days ago. I'm still waiting on my interface cable (the 4.0 uses some strange plug which will not work with the 3.0 cable). I'm also waiting on my AF1, but I don't need it to tune the engine.

What's Paul's idea?

This Motec setup fires leadings and trailings together, although it is with the stock cosmo ignitors. This is the same as setting up the 6cyl waste-spark mode.

We are currently testing a less expensive solution for the 20B coil/ignitor situation. We'll post our findings when it is ready.

Will it have dual Leading sparks like any standard Mazda rotary ignition after '86? Or has that proven difficult with the 20B?

I got my 20b from an importer for a HELL of a lot less than the prices I'm seeing posted here. I will post the name of the place, as soon as I'm sure that I won't be needing to buy another one (since the shippers dropped my engine). I just don't want them to be sold out and me stuck with nothing... hope you understand

So most people aren't using a Haltech? I thought that was a definite with a 20B.

No, most people are using a Motec. Some are using a Haltech, Electromotive, or Wolf, and there are some other 20B's out there with other various EMS units running them.

It depends on your local pricing for parts and labor, the current condition of your car, how you build it, how much work you can do yourself, and what kind of equipment you have access to. In the US, the cost is about $10,000 for a very basic TII do-it-yourself swap, and about $40,000-50,000 for a professional installation. My first post on this thread has a link which pretty much covers what you will need to make your own shopping list.
