air pump replacement

how often do you replace your air pumps? my air pump has been acting up which at 79k, i wonder if it needs to be replace...

My electric clutch started squealing at about 76k miles. It's pretty common.

just remove it and get a hiflow cat! the stock cat and the airpump weight quite a bit

A Hi-flow cat does nothing without the air pump attached. He has to have to legally pass smog.

how does a hi flow cat do nothing without an airpump attached?! as long as your car is warmed up before the smog test, you'll be fine...there are hi flow cats that do not need the airpump to function

Mine died at 103k miles. Try to find a good used one as new they are like $965 or so even from Ray at Malloy and they list for over $1,100.
PS. It's not really a bad thing not to pollute the air we all breathe!

They seem to have about the smae life span as the engine 80-120k miles. There are ones for sale from time to time. A high flow metalic cat supposedly doesn't need extra air pump help but the air pump is still needed for visual inspection and they can either refuse to test you or instantly fail you and take your money without hooking up the car for the sniffer. They can fail you for visual, which is why they just refuse you so you don't become irate for them taking your money for nothing.

So will running stock cat without air pump ruin the cat? My air pump went belly up today and I just put a shorter belt on bypassing the air pump. I am in SoCal and will eventually have to do smog, but I just want to have an idea if the thing is going to start throwing codes or . . .

Its not going to throw codes. There's no real hard evidence that running without an airpump ruins the cat. However, you won't pass a smog test without it working.

Don't buy from RR&R. They charged me $500 for a used one (You can find them used for $50 on ebay)that lasted two weeks and I had Greddy pulleys allready installed!

If you need to drive the car. Get a Greddy or similar pully kit but make shure it includes a belt. Pettit sells a kit and replacement belts. That will hold you untill you can get a used air pump for a realistic price.

And some have experienced irratic idle and hesitation on acceleration too. Cars seem to be different for some reason. I assume unplugging it would let you know if that will be an issue.

Mine died at 130k assuming its the original smog pump. Without the pump, my car sometimes idled funky and the check engine light would come on at random times. The car was back to normal once I installed a replacement air pump. Everyone told me to eliminate the air pump but I actually like not smelling like exhaust after every trip.
