checked out an FD today. noticed that in front of the strut towers and right behind headlights there was semetrical openings through the chassis and I could see the wheel/tire and susp. bits. Is there supposed to be something covering this? I'm just thinking alot of debris might fly into the engine bay...

There should be a lining inside the wheel well to cover that. Some people remove them to fit larger wheels/tires when the car is lowered.
