Ya.... so I finally got the flywheel nut off... OMG
That has to be the hardest thing yet... 3 of us worked on it.... none of our impacts would do a thing. Got a 5 foot breaker bar and had 2 guys on it.... NOTHING... I couldn't beleive it.
Then I whiped out the torch... heated up that nut like no other.... tryed again... nothing.... alright. One more time... SNAP as we all fell to the ground. Thought to myself CRAP... just broke the $20 socket I bet.
NOPE... broke her loose!
My question is... when I put the new one on... how tight does it have to be?!
Also... any hints for getting the actual flywheel off? Worth getting a puller? or is there another way?

not hard at all. Get the bolt off and then just slide the old off, the new on, and bolt her down. I ran into problems with reinstalling it over the key and ended up bending the key. Just take your time and it will go really smoothly.

I have heard several times to loosen the flywheel nut but not remove it and then pound with a rubber mallet around the circumference of the flywheel until a very loud bang is heard when the thing comes loose. The nut keeps the flywheel from taking off your toes.

My impact gun has three settings for tightening. 1, 2, and 3. Says 3 is 500 ft/lbs, but doesn't say anything about 1 or 2. I just hit it real hard on 2 for awhile, then a little bit on 3. I also put some red loctite on there...

McMaster-Carr
Search for part# 5926A4
You will have the flywheel off in a couple minutes without the use of hammers or prying.

Hey az_lynx,
There is a tool similar to what grampa referred that is the easiest way to get the flywheel off. Not sure if you have an Autozone near where you live, but they have a rent-a-tool program where you leave a deposit and they loan you a tool for free. Go and "rent" a harmonic dampener puller (looks very similar to the tool grampa is referencing at McMaster-Carr). You will need two metric bolts that go into the two holes near the center of flywheel. Place a flat piece of metal over the eccentric shaft with the flywheel nut over it (in order not to ruin the thread). You will then turn the center bolt on the puller which in turns pulls the flywheel away from the motor. Once it has popped off - the flywheel nut is then removed and take off the flywheel.
I've had one flywheel just "pop/fall" off when I removed the flywheel bolt. I've had two that I had to use the above mentioned puller. I've had one flywheel that I had to use a large puller (similar to the hydraulic puller set sold at McMaster-Carr) and a torch and it barely came off. In that situation I had to pull of the "ring gears" of the flywheel before having enough space to latch onto the flywheel. Hopefully your situation only warrants the smaller puller. Goodluck - you'll probably need it .
