Would U buy a 2nd FD for heavy mods?

I am toying with an idea of buying a second FD for heavy mods...

Very hesistant to tear into my current FD. IMO it is tough to put a car back to stock after tearing into it (i.e my 94 cobra).

Depends what you are going to use it for.

I'd personally rather put my money into a few good stocks or some real estate rather than a pile of shiny parts.

I've toyed with the idea of buying a second FD to DD, but I think i would be better off purchasing a newer car or something less maintenance intensive. I'll probably purchase another one eventually, but it will be another weekend car after I have a nicer dd.

already have $$$ into real estate...

I want 400+ rwhp out of the 2nd FD...not on my current 94.

If you want 2 FD's, go for it.

However, if I just wanted an additional sports car with more power, I wouldn't purchase another FD to do it. I would either:

1. Turn my current FD into that monster and then get a sporty lower powered car

2. Just get a car already with power like a Vette or a Viper and keep the current FD as the more well mannered sports car

So?

If resale value is such a concern it's pointless to be modifying the car in the first place. FD's aren't some priceless antique. Do whatever you want with it because you'll never get all your money back out of it anyhow.

Why not go 20b? Isn't it more reliable at high HP than the 13B? If you're dropping $15k + parts into a 2nd FD... why not just save a little more for a conversion?

To buy a 2nd FD = 10-15k, go single turbo (you said heavy mods) would be another 10-15k?

that's 20-30k right there... almost as much as a 20B conversion

+1

Resale and modifying do not go together.

i definitely went backwards, my first fd is heavily modded (raceported motor, single turbo...) if i buy a 2nd fd, it will remain relatively stock except for safety and reliability mods.

+1. Since i already started modding my current fd, my 2nd one will stay stay or upgraded to look completely stock or converted to fully 99 spec stocker as collector.

a sedan, a SUV/truck, another sports car and 2+ FD's will be perfect. =)

I would just modify the one you have. There is no point in keeping your car stock IMO unless you have a low milage special option car. Like a low production clean CYM or a Silver 95 r2 etc.
If you ask me a fd just isn't an fd until you tear it apart and rebuild it once or twice. Hell that is the whole point of owning one as far as I am concerned.

well my 94 glass top is special...it has been in the family since day 1. Car is immaculate in every way...hard to keep tearing into it.

Took to Gotham Racing for tuning session...Steve K. said he never seen a FD in such great condition...especially the under carriage.

Well I suppose that is a good reason. You wouldn't be the first guy to modify a clean one though. Just ask Ernie T what he has done with his near mint CYM.

I am a fan of this idea.

My first FD is the heavily modded car. I blew the engine on my first FD that I had been working on for the past 4 years. It wasn't a pretty car by any means but it was still a FD. 2 months later I bought a clean, low mileage R1 with a blown coolant seal. Dropped a reman into the new car and have just been enjoying the stock R1 while I gather up more and more performance parts for the other one.

Don't be scared. Just do it and don't look back. It is pretty damn cool seeing 2 FDs parked side by side in your garage... even if one doesn't come out to play very often.

I was in the similar situation as SLOW 7.

My first FD, I blew the coolant seal and 2 months later, i bought my MB. Been driving the MB for past 2+ years and I was right back in the game.. except with less power.

Now I'm building my Blk FD and bought another VR R1 to track it (it needs some work). Good thing about having a second or third FD is that I now don't worry about down time, something happening to one, or worrying about trying something new. If something happens to one, I have other(s) to tinker with. I say go buy another FD. I personally rather have an 2nd FD than a new civic and such..

I agree if your goal is to make money or save money.. But I think of rotary cars as my hobby. Its something I do for enjoyment and to socialize with people with same or similar interest. I don't agree with those who take out thousands and thousands of dollars in debt to mod their car to extreme... And I wouldn't recommend getting an additional FD if its going to put strain on your wallet. Get it, especially if you have money sitting around and you if 2nd FD is going to make you happy! Thats pretty much why I bought what I bought..

Cool....glad to see few board members feeling the same.

I have one in mind but it's same color...kinda suck having 2 same color FDs but it does open up advantage of people thinking it's same one (especially the parole office "wife") LOL!
