Would a puck clutch do any wear and tear on your tranny?

Im rebuilding a local FD owners transmission because it wont stay in first gear. It clicks in, but the second he tries to start moving it gets forced back out. The piece above the syncro but below the actual gear is all torn up. There doesnt seem to be any reason for what happened though. Could the fact that 1st is very rough and jerks the car be the reason his 1st gear is ******* up?
