No,you are right,i'm not arguing over the costs..Pettit has been very good to me so far..It's just frustrating when you start getting in so deep and you look back and think "man I wish I wouldn't have done that"..But that's the nature of the beast as they say.

My blown motors (piston) started on me when I was 17. Paid for the first one......That was enough to shock me into learning to do it myself. I mean, I could rebuild my mountain bike and do brake jobs on a car. So I did about a month of research and learned how to pull the engine when the 1st rebuild died - my fault, I drove the **** out of the car. Then that 2nd rebuild died, oops! Tried going back to the shop that did #2. and they backed out so I just said F-it, I'm going to do it again and all by myself. I pulled it, took it apart, measured (plasti gauge) what I could. Looked for "witness" marks (learned all in the library - internet now), then took it to a machine shop, got them to quote me on the work, looked for the best prices in parts which turned out to be the same shop that owned the machine shop (Lordco Parts). Got them to machine it and collected the parts and put it together myself (plasti gauge, etc.) I say, do your research, get your parts, pay someone to do the work you can't, ask some people to measure what you can't, then do it yourself. Get that rebuild video people are talking about. I'll tell ya, there is nothing more rewarding than doing it yourself and trust me.............you can. Its a puzzle, a complicated one but, if you follow the instructions you'll be just fine and have a really nice engine that you can say you rebuilt. Good luck to ya, I FEEL YOUR PAIN! Don't rush it if you can avoid it. I'm not the zen master, just think anyone can do it. One more thing, tough through the financial situations, it will make you stronger and will make you learn the value of money, especially at a young age. By the way, that last rebuild on the piston engine I did, is now 9 years old and 220,000 km, on a 1986 Toyota Celica. I now have an FD that is more reliable than the old Toyota. Go for it!!

14 to 18 vacuum? If you are at any time pulling 17 or 18 vacuum at anything below 1000 rpm at idle when the car is warm I would not be so quick to point a finger at the engine. Pettit is good though so they are probably right. Good luck.

You might ask for the compression numbers from Pettit just to see what they are at.

these issues have nothing to do with the age of the current owner, though sometimes younger owners tend to neglect small things that are very important but most often i see previous owners sell the cars to unsuspecting people who now have bought all the previous owners lack of care and neglect.

An LS-1 swap? You are looking at $10k to do it correctly if you can't do all the work yourself.

If you can't afford Pettit, then get a reman, get some FD guys over and R&R yourself, as Mahjik suggested. Otherwise store the car for now, as others have suggested.

And next time a teenager starts a "can I afford this car" thread, please post your story.
im 19 and i flooded my FD ( im pretty sure anyway ) going to start to proccess soon

its kind of hard IMO when buying a used car to take care of it 100% how it SHOULD bem not knowing the previous owners habits. so when diving into it your kind of just guessing around a bit. thats why i cant wait to get a rebuild and everything tip top. id rather the **** break being my fsault then wondering if it were my fault or the previous owners.

I am 19 and in college, I was in a similar position so I can relate. I kept the car though. However, if you are that much in a bind with money then sell the thing. I know you might love it and what not but it's not worth it. Just sell it, take that money and wait to find a manual FD that is in better shape. They come around man trust me.

But, if you do decide to keep it. I suggest getting a reman.

I'm 17 right now, and I'm taking my sweet time with my car. putting down 420rwhp may be a good end result,k but it takes a lot of time and money. I saved up for a long time, and i documented the whole entire process as well as kept a record of everything that I had done and bought.

I had this type of a problem with my first 7 from a lemon I purchased...
7s are definitely a luxury item amongst the fanatics however they are not worth more then what you will be spending on the car. If you are considering to sell it I would recommending to part it out and sell the car as a roller, otherwise you will not be able to make it close to breaking even with a blown motor. Personally, I would put the car away in storage and save up to fix it up since you already made your way to purchase the car. Go all the way with it or don't bother with it is my opinion. I saved up for a year and got my first car running again. It is a love and hate relationship with 7s just remember that, hence why I got another 7 after few years of missing it.
