Question Wobbly rubber mounting of RB dual muffler

After installation of my RB dual, I've noticed that the muffler assembly (and accompanying pipe leading back to the main cat) is a bit wobbly as far as mounting goes. The N-Tech hi-flow cat doesn't have the extensive heat shielding (some of which bolts to the body) that the stock main cat had, and the Greddy SP that I had before used the same stock rubber doughnut hanger mounts, but it was lighter, and the hangers were spaced farther out, so it didn't seem to be as loose. The RB, however, easily moves almost an inch laterally. I know that the rubber mounting is necessary for vibration and engine movement purposes, but has anyone else with RB duals and a hi-flow cat ever noticed this, and would you think it may be a problem? I'm just concerned about the strain it may put on the DP assembly, since that long length of pipe from CB to hiflow cat to DP is a pretty long lever to be tweaking on the DP/turbo attachment (even though it is supported along that length by the rubber doughnut hangers). I put a temporary zip-tie attachment on one of the muffler hangers to keep it from moving laterally in the meantime.

Hi Kent,

I just took a quick look at my RB CB. I have the stock cat, so my situation is a little different then yours. The muffler is pretty solid. I have to push it pretty hard in order to get it to move. It moves about 1/2 inch in either direction.

Sounds like you need to have a bung welded to the cat to stabilize it.

Big help eh........

Thanx Adam, yeah, I figure I'm going to have stabilize the assembly somehow. I think it'll be easier at the muffler end rather than the hi-flow cat, since the leverage will be better. I definitely don't like the amount of flex that's there now.

How about this:

Clamp a U-bolt on the pipe after the cat. Then bolt a metal bar from one end of the u-bolt to an existing mounting spot somewhere under there. You might want a rubber spacer in there to absorb some vibration.

Thanx for the suggestion, Adam. I'll have to crawl under there one of these days and take a look to see where I can bolt it up to. It's mostly the lateral movement that's the problem; the complete exhaust is well-supported and firm vertically.

MY RB exhaust sits pretty well. I have DP/high-flow cat/RB duals. RB may have stiffer mounts for you if you bought the exhaust directly from them. They are really helpful.
