Wiring Question about x-14 connector

I've been trying to trace this down for a while in the wiring diagram. Can someone tell me what this yellow wire is for?

D4rw1n,

The answer you seek is found in the WDM (Wiring Diagram Manual). First, verify what harness this connector belongs to. If your signature is correct then I assume your FD is a 1993. Refer to Pg Z-117, Diagram X-2. Comparing your photo to the diagram, it appears to belong to the Dash harness and is a M/T car. The more challenging part would be to read applicable schematics to identify the specific yellow wire. A brief scan revealed the following diagrams: B-1 (all), B-2, C-1, C-2 (auto only), F-3, and H-1 (Auto only). Since this connector interfaces the dash and emissions harnesses then focus your attention to the B-1 schematics more than the others. Let us know what you find out!

Cheers,
George

One other observation about the X-14 connector: It is different between the 93 and 94 model year. According to my 94 schematic, that position is blank where your yellow wire points to. Therefore, make sure you refer to the proper model year WDM.

George

So If I'm looking at this correctly, it's going to the "DRL Control Unit"? I'm assuming that's for day time running lights for Canada, which my car doesn't have.

D4rw1n,

Yes, you are correct. That wire is only used for the DRL feature in Canadian FDs. I also wanted to verify the other yellow wire shown in your photo. It should be a Yellow/White wire, correct? Based upon my research into the WDM (for the 93), that Y/W wire is part of the Speedometer Sensor (found on the transmission).

Did I help answer your question?

Cheers,
George

Green Arrow = Yellow/White wire
Red Arrow = Yellow wire

WDM C-1a, Connector X-14 shows Y/W & Y/R wires. These go to the Speedometer Sensor on the transmission.

Yep, you helped tons. Thanks dude! I had probably looked right at it like 50 times and never noticed the little "Y". I should probably invest in an actual shop manual and stop using the pdfs. Yes, that wire is yellow/white, it crosses behind the yellow/red wire on my index finger. Might be a good way to start a pinout for the x-14 connector since it causes so much confusion, and in my searching no one has really done it. I realize that is what the WDM is for, but when you have to look through like 12 different pages for one connector it gets kind of confusing. Especially when you throw in the fact that the 93 is wired differently from the 94 and 95.

D4rw1n,

Glad to lend a hand. And thanks for confirming the Yellow/White wire in your photo! Reading schematics can be cumbersome if you are not accustomed to them. Using the PDF version is pretty handy given the ability to zoom in. I have both the PDF and hard copy versions of the FSMs. Sometimes my older eyes have difficulties reading the small details on the hard copy (think paper-back book size). Both versions have their advantages and disadvantages. For quick references, I grab the paper-back version.

A pin out of the Common Connectors (X-series) would help a small group of people who are doing restoration work. I believe the average Joe would get more mileage (no pun intended) from reading schematics that are relevant to a specific system, such as the Instrument Cluster or Engine Control/Fuel System, etc...

If you stop to think about it, Mazda was smart to depict the system-specific Connectors at the bottom of each system schematic. To take that one step further, they did the exact same thing with the Common Connector list. The only down side would be a repetitive flip back and forth between the common connector list and the applicable system. It's easy to do with a physical book but more cumbersome in a PDF version. Because these common connectors are used in multiple systems then it made sense to list it in one location as opposed to duplicating the same connector across multiple systems. That would add bulk to the manual and may add further confusion to the technician. Furthermore, the technician would seldom have a need to fidget with connectors between wire harnesses unless there was a problem with a specific system.

Cheers,
George
