Wiring gauges? Need help.
I'm getting ready to install a boost and water temp gauge (Autometer) on my A-pillar. I have a dual pod mount. Anyway, I've read on Rob Robinette's site how to install the gauges, but I didn't find anything about how to wire them. I've also searched on this forum and can't find anything.
I need a power source for the lights and one for the temp gauge. Obviously I only want to power the lights when I have my dash lights on, but I need constant power for the temp gauge.
Where did you guys get your power from? I have tons of experience doing under-the-hood work, but I've never done any kind of automotive wiring besides installing a CD deck and speakers.
Thanks,
Paul

What brand of gauges are you installing? Not that it matters, I'm just a nosy SOB. As for the 12V for lighting, you can get that from the steering column since there's a stalk there that turns on/off the lights...just search for a wire in there that's got 12V only when the lights are on. As for the 12V constant, same type of place, but other side of the column. If you take the upper and lower steering column trim off and look at the ignition switch (where you put the key in), you'll see two wires coming off of it that seem to run toward the front of the car. In my 94 they were black with either a blue or red stripe on them. Get your voltmeter out and test them and I guarantee you'll be in business on one of them. Even though it seems counter-intuitive to go into the ignition, I verified this only a few days ago doing my own gauge install. I got my 12V on ignition from the cigarette lighter, and grounded to the ECU bracket.
Cheers,
Patrick

I went the cheap route. I bought Autometer boost and temp gauges. I just couldn't warrant spending big bucks on the other types of gauges, and the Autometer's match the stock gauges pretty good.
Thanks for your help. I think I'm gonna start the install tonite. Hopefully all goes well

I ran my positive to the little light on the ashtray-didnt check beforehand on which one was the constant so i have two splices down there.
The negative i ran to the ground point under the steering column...I should put the plastic cover back on one of these days.

Got them in tonite! They work too! Is it just me, or does the Autometer dual gauge pod suck ***? It doesn't fit at all. I had to trim it in a couple places so it wouldn't hit the door when I closed it.
I got the 12V constant from a large harness under the steering wheel, and the 12V for the lights from the ash tray (thanks Mastacow!).
