Hey everyone,

My drivers side window will roll down but not roll up, I can hear the motor letting the window down and get no response when I try to roll it up so I decided to try and clean the contacts the way described in this post: https://www.rx7club.com/interior-ext...repair-900665/

I was able to clean and reassemble the unit without a problem (they were quite dirty), however when I connected it back to the harness to test it I now get no response rolling the windows up or down on the drivers and passenger side. Also, now there is no response on the passenger window from the switch on the passenger side directly either. I feel like there must be something wrong with the circuit now that no windows in the car are getting power whatsoever, any suggestions as to what I may have done while cleaning/assembling the drivers side switch unit? (note i only cleaned the contacts for the driver window in the unit)

The passenger window worked fine before I cleaned the assembly (with both the drivers and passenger switches).

Update

I checked the fuse box and the power window fuse (30A) is blown. I tried to replace it and it immediately blew again, I blew two fuses this way within about a minute.

 

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, I cant seem to find any threads pointing me in the right direction as to why this fuse is now blowing repeatedly (and immediately).

I've checked the wiring for the drivers and passengers side switch units for exposed wires that might be causing a short and everything seems to be alright. Is it possible that the short is coming from the actual switch itself somehow after cleaning it?

 

I would think a power wire is grounding out on something and killing the fuse?
Check for breaks in the harness that may be grounding out.

 

Unplug the switch. If you put in a new fuse and it doesn't blow, it's probably the switch.

Cleaning the switch only works about half the time. Get a new switch, that's the best way to solve the problem. Most likely when you reassembled the switch something isn't right so it's shorting itself out internally.

The wiring to and from the window motors are hardy and run well (unless someone has hacked into them) and I seriously doubt they are shorting or causing problems.

Also, get the '94 style window switch. It's cheaper than the 93, bolts in, and has the auto window down feature.

Alright so I took apart and re-assembled the switch again, and it turns out I put in the metal tabs backwards (flipped over) and that was causing the short. I got it back in the car and now the fuse is good and the windows work!!

However, after testing the drivers window a few times it stopped rolling up again. I took the unit apart again and just compressed the springs a few times and put it back it and was able to get the window to roll up, but I'm not confident the contacts are 100% so i'm going to leave it rolled up for a while.

Dale, do you have any suggestions as to why the cleaned unit might still have a bad contact? I would really prefer not to buy a new unit if I can fix this one (the 94 switch is $190)
