Will you be interested in a fuel reservoir for track use?

I am in the process of making a fuel reservoir for my car. Many of the road racers know that the FD fuel tank's design is very crappy. Most of the people will have to run full tank of gas on the track because under hard cornering, the fuel in the tank will be tilted to one side and the fuel pump cannot pick up any fuel if that happens. The result is possible a blown engine due to lean condition. Recently, my friend's engine was blown just due to that. Most of the Japanese tuners use a fuel reservoir to prevent that from happening. I will describe the benefits below:

1. Obviously, you do not have to run full tank of gas on the track. Save weight, faster time. Probably better handling too

2. To use a fuel reservoir, you need to run at least one external fuel pump. That means you will have two fuel pumps. The stock pump is used for fuel pick up and supplies the fuel to the reservoir and the external one will run between the reservoir and the fuel rail. You will have more fuel flowing capacity than just using an upgrade stock replacement fuel pump.

The fuel reservoir will come with the male AN -6 fittings to fit the stock fuel lines. If you want to use a different size hose AN-8 or AN-10, it can be done for additional cost. If you want to run more than one external fuel pump, fittings can be added to the fuel reservoir as well. The estimated cost for the fuel reservoir will be around $250. If you want a complete system which comes with stainless steel braided lines, Earl's fittings, fuel pump (Bosch or Walbro), it can be done too but I have to calculate the cost on a complete system later. I will scan some pictures from the Japanese mag I have to show you guys what it's going to look like. Email me if you are interested.

fuel reservoir capacity

I forgot to mention how big the reservoir is going to be. Most high flow external fuel pumps flow about 255 liter per hour. That means it flows 0.071 liter/sec. I am planning to make the reservoir to be around 1.5 liter capacity which means it can supply about 21 sec of fuel at the max fuel pump flowing rate (255 liter/hour) in case your stock location pump cannot pick up any fuel due to hard cornering. I really do not think there is any corner on any track that will take more than 21 sec to pass through. I guess a larger one can be made too but I do not see the benefit of it. If it's too big, you lose the benefit of it. I will add pictures on my website later today and I will post here to nofify you guys.

good thinking!!!

This sounds like a useful mod for all people who do DE's and are aware of this problem. I had presumed the solution was to install a fuel cell, which I had no intention of ever doing. I, for one, will give serious consideration to this proposal.

I recommend you forward this idea to the big RX7 list if you have not already done so.

Best regards,
Scott

updates

I have added a page on my website with photos of the fuel reservoir. go to the fuel reservoir link under performance mods.

My $.02 :

The transfer pump will have to pump at a much higher flow rate than the motors supply pump or else the motor could "out run" the capacity of the transfer pump (aux tank would go dry)

The aux holding tank will need a vent that runs to the stock tank to allow it to be filled when empty (air will be displaced by gas and needs to go somewhere). This line will act as a re-circulation once the holding tank is full.

Although I can't think of a single turn lasting over 21 sec., I can think of a series of turns that last that long and without a very high flow transfer pump, it may run out of juice.

BTW - what about taking a stock tank and adding baffles (foam) to it and using a built in surge tank? How about adding a 2nd pump with the pickup located on the other side of the tank? Or see if this will fit :Surge tank

new updates on fuel reservoir

I have add more details on my website including diagrams and explanation on how it works and why it works and why I will not use baffles, in tank surge tank etc. Check it out.

Or go to http://www.rotaryextreme.com/ and click on the fuel reservoir link.

Thanks.
