wierd coolant problem

last night i was driving and just before i got home it starts to steam from under the hood, and i didnt overheat....... it came out for awhile..it was raining and cold so it looked real bad...started it up today and a little smoke comes out near the alternator and near the filler cap....any ideas?....i just need somewhere to start

hmm.. just as a stab in the dark... check AST, coolant hoses, and lastly, the radiator itself - look for leaks around the tanks on top & bottom of the radiator - that shouldn't cause any smoke/steam if it's leaking, though.

If your leak is behind the water pump and down low check the 2 coolant hoses that go to the turbos. One is usually as hard as a rock if it has not been replaced already (VERY few have been) and will leak past the clamp. Replace both, use OEM only due to the funky bend. Not that bad of a job IF you have some long, curved, needle nose hose pliers. They are available and worth the money to save your sanity trying to get those little suckers out and back on!
