why won't my engine stall?

suspecting that I have a vacume leak somewhere, I took off the intake elbow to investigate. I then proceeded to plug the hole for the air bypass solenoid and the hole for the air bleed screw with my thumbs. These holes are at the bottom of the throttle body. Anyway, by doing so, I would think that would starve my engine of air.....but it kept running! I could feel sucksion (sp) at my thumbs pluggin up the holes though. So, the engine must be getting air from somewhere else??? thanks for your inputs.
