Why is my flywheel/press.plate gouged?

I had my flywheel and pressure plate resurfaced when I had my transmission rebuilt. Its a sr motorsports flywheel and an act pressure plate I believe. I've put on maybe 1000 miles on the car since then and have brought the car back 3 or 4 times because the shop couldn't fix a noise that we thought was in the tranny. The noise they tell me is my rear stationary gear that has teeth breaking off .

Anyway, I dropped the tranny and found that the flywheel and pressure plate both have some nasty gouging in the surface (looks like after the resurfacing) It looks a little blued and melted.

The strange thing is that both pieces have the exact same pattern when seated together, face-to-face.

I have some pictures. The pressure plate pic is mirrored to show how the pattern overlays if they where face-to-face.

Since noone else is answering...

Run your fingernail across it. If it's smooth I wouldn't worry about it. I can't see any physical scratches in the pics.

I think those stains are just corrosion and heat discoloration that will rub off the next time it's put in gear with some slip. My Maxima is real grabby sometimes in the morning - I figure a little corrosion on the clutch/flywheel metal is causing it. One good rev with the clutch rubbing to clean the faces usually smooths it out.

My flywheel looked like that, too, except the whole friction surface was covered with the "spots". I was pretty alarmed by the appearance, but the shop said it was normal and even reusable as-is. Mine looked like it was gouged and spotted all over, but it seemed quite smooth to the touch. I guess the appearance is deceiving.

The only odd thing is that the wear / friction marks are uneven, mainly at the bottom on both the pressure plate and clutch disc. Do you know if the pressure plate was torqued down correctly and completely?

I honestly don't know if anything was done correctly. I've taken car back to corksport at least 6 times. They had pineapple racing rebuilt two trannys and have taken the tranny down at least two other times. That leaves a lot off possiblilty for it have been done incorrectly.

It does feel like all the really dark spots are a little deeper than he refinished surface. I don't have much experiance with that, but it does appear to be more than what would be done on a normaly operating installation. It was the first thing my dad commented on when he saw it and he has seen a few.

Maybe its nothing.

If it wasn't for the pattern being the same and only on one side, I won't have thought to much of it.

I meant the uneven wear on the pressure plate and flywheel . It looks as if they overtightened the bottom and not enough on top. The bolts should be tightened in a star pattern. I would think that of all people, Corksport would do the job correclty.

By the way, I would think the above could cause some noise in your transmission, especially if the clutch was never fully disengaged.
