Why do most people say FDs are from 93-95 when....

The earliest model introduced model was in 92? My body shop had a VR FD in there and I asked him if it was a 93, and he looked at the VIN and told me it is a 92 FD. Something about Mazda introducing them in 1991 or something to be a 92 model.

But mostly everyone refers the produced model to be from 1993-1995......

So are the 1992 FDs even rarer than the rest?

They came out in early '92 in the US as a '93 model. My car is actually a '92 if you use Sept as the usual model year cut-off...

it was released in late 91 as a 93 model. Mazda is famous for this stuff. Notice there is no 92 RX7 or 98 miata? In 1997 Mazda released the 1999 Miata.

The official model year started for 93. Manufacturers may list a model as the next year model as of Jan of the same year. For example, if Mazda brought out the RX-8 in late January 2003, they could legitimately call it a 2004 car.

Oh really now? So the VIN # on that VR FD that I was talking about will actually say it's made in 93 or 91?

the fd stated production 12-91, if you look at the vin it has a spot for model year. all of the fd's made between 12-91 to 8-92 are 93's, there were no 93 rx7's made in 93 at all. the 94's start in about 4-93. the 95's end
12-95.

I've owned 11 93s, only ONE of them was built in 93. Earliest 93 I've had was built in 2/92. Yes they are 93s, just built early.

All auto manufacturers do this, think about it, "new" cars come out in August or September, so when do you think they were built?

In Australia we were buying them in mid '92 from memory, and they were plated towards the latter half of 91.

It's rediculous..when Ford introduced the last F150 they did so two years early. I don't recall the year but I lived by a Ford dealership and remember thinking how stupid it was they were introducing a 1997 in 1995 (for example) My FD was build in 92 and sold as 93, like most others.

In the US, designation of model Year is governed by law, as follows.

US Code of Federal Regulations, Section 40, Chapter I, Part 85:

"85.2302 - Definition of model year. Model year means the manufacturer's annual production period (as determined under § 85.2304) which includes January 1 of such calendar year, provided, that if the manufacturer has no annual production period, the term "model year" shall mean the calendar year."
"85.2303 Duration of model year. A specific model year must always include January 1 of the calendar year for which it is designated and may not include a January 1 of any other calendar year. Thus, the maximum duration of a model year is one calendar year plus 364 days."

All car manufacturers do that. Read the paper and you'll find car dealer ads for 2004 models. Last I checked it's still 2003.

there are many FDs that are a 93 model that were accually produced in late 91. Although it was produced in 91 it wasnt sold till 92 as a 93 model. You got to remember these were built in japan, they dont just magically apear in the states after they are produced, shipping cars from japan is a timely process. By the way I was told my car was #200 of the line of FDs

Where do you guys find these #s from?

I understand the one year difference such as introducing the RX-8 in 2003 as a 2004 model, but I didn't understand why the production of the 91 FDs were sold as 1993, the 2 years apart difference, until now.
