Quick answer, the ECU only has one wire going to the fan relays to bump the fan speed up one. An aftermarket ECU with multiple outputs could be configured to run the stock relays totally but you'd have to do some re-wiring, it's not plug and play.

Holy hell man you are a Rotary god!! I found your thread and that is an amazing write-up so much information to read it's unbelievable; I know what I'm spending my Friday night doing!!

I'm glad you are still on the forums, this exactly answered my question. I was thinking I wouldn't need to change the thermoswitch because I can set it on the ECU but after reading about the 4 different inputs I see exactly what you are talking about!

Question for you I see you recommend going with a 89-91 FC thermoswitch at 97 deg.C , but I have seen a lot of other users going with a Miata thermoswitch at 95 deg. C. I'm sure you have gone over this topic. I haven't searched the forums yet for this topic but is the 2 deg difference the reason all those guys are going with them? I know you said the FC switch is plug and play no modifications needed, is that the same case for the Miata one?

I just found your thread regarding this: https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generati...u-read-397156/

As you said no need to buy a Miata switch anymore. Thanks again, you sir are a Rotary guardian angel!

Now to find one of these OEM switches and see how the hell to swap them out, I saw a couple guys saying its a pain in the a** but even if it is, I think its definitely worth it!

It's really not too bad of a job to swap the thermoswitch. If you remove the alternator that makes the job way easier.

The FC thermoswitch at 97 does just fine. Remember, that's just ONE of the fan inputs. Many people with PowerFC's use the Datalogit to set the fan temp at 85 in the PFC for the ECU-controlled fan speed. So, at 85, the fans come on Low. If it's really hot out and the car keeps warming up at 97 the fan switch kicks on, putting the fans in Medium. Then, if you have the AC on, that brings the fan up another notch to High.

Glad the writeup helped! Funny thing is over the years I forget stuff, I've had to Google my own write-ups to refresh my memory .

You are right again Dale! Luckily I'm installing a Pineapple Racing BT idler pulley kit at the moment so I have the belts off and alternator loose already so I will just remove it and it shouldn't be hard at all!! Now the hard part is waiting for ups to bring the switch haha

Yea I definitely understand it now, thank you again for your contribution to the rotary community, we would be screwed without you. At least I would be, I would've just done it on the ecu and called it a day like a lot of people with the wrong information say to do. I'm still reading over it because on top the write up you did there is a lot of comments with useful information.

haha yea I see a lot of your posts are from a decade or more ago so I completely understand you.

I might want to bother you with some questions, if that's fine with you? I made the mistake of buying a already modified FD, even though I told myself multiple times to get a stock one lol. Right now the fans are direct wired, they turn on right when i start up and sounds like at least med or high speed, I definitely want to get rid of that and go back to proper cooling. I'm sure there's plenty of info out in the forum , but just in case i know you are experienced here, I might want to reach out to you for Some help.

I would make a new post about it - most likely I'll be responding . You'll have to go through the fan system and see which part the previous owner hot-wired.

Glad I could be of help!

Damn it!!! I looked around the forums and saw nothing but good things about it, and I have a buddy that tracks his FD using this one with no issues. **** I didn't see this post, oh well too late. You know funny thing I actually received a defective pulley out the package and had to get it replaced before even the first install. The bearing felt like a little lump when I spun it in my hand luckily I noticed it before installing. Rob from pineapple racing is really helpful sent me a replacement first and I'm going to send the bearing back to him after. I thought it was just a low chance coincidence that I got a defective bearing but now I am a little worried... Damn it hahaha

Well this makes me feel better...: https://www.rx7club.com/new-old-prod.../#post11932082

Post #3 from that same thread.

Banzai racing is a really reliable performance shop, if they vouch for it I'm sure it will hold up for me, Plus they say it has a lifetime warranty and installation is easy so that's awesome!

You know a common reason for failure with that pulley is over-tightening of the belt, Rob from Pineapple warned me about that and a few other guys on that thread are saying thats most likely why they are failing. I have a belt tensioner gauge and Pineapple racing gives you the tension specs so I'm feeling pretty confident now... either way thanks for bringing that up and wish me luck!!
