Who here is an original FD owner?
Just want to know who here on the board is the original owner of their FD.....
How was your experience with the Mazda dealer all those years ago? Do you ever plan to sell your FD? I dunno, just any kind of info that you guys can provide as the original owner.

Have owned and driven dayly to work my R1 which was bought in July 1992. My first engine lost oil pressure due to lousy Mazda assembly of the E-shaft oil jets. My second engine was a very bad rebuild (cost over $3000) by Hayes shop of horrows! I scraped it and built my current engine which is perfect.
Mazda dealers are OK for warranty work, otherwise the ones here in Houston suck!!!!!!

I bought my R1 in March 93. First engine ... "O" ring failure at 50K miles. Mazda Remanufactured engine ran reasonablly strong... 390 RWHP with a single until I had an experimental failure with nitrous. My fault entirely. Now with a "real" engine. Running strong. I have to sell the car but everytime I drive it... I have second thoughts. There just isn't any car for under $50K that handles as well and runs as fast.
I gave up on the Mazda dealer after my first engine failure.... It took them a whole month to figure out that the "O" ring failed... I picked up the car twice and returned it after driving down the street both times. Luckily, Mazda / dealer / I worked something out.... I only paid list for the remanufactured engine. The paid for the labor.

I bought mine new in '94. The dealer had no clue. After 3 attempts to fix an oil pan leak, I took it to KD Rotary, and it has never seen the dealer again. Have had very few problems with the car; I replaced the engine at 80,000 miles because I went single. It was still running strong.
I bought my 2000 edition of FD (rs type) from SEC, one of the biggest car importers in Thailand. I brought him for almost 4million baht (around 89,000 US)...don't be surprise tax rate for sport car here is 200percent.
After I bought for two moth i lost a carpet and I face overheat problem. The mechanics at SEC can't do anything. Mazduh dealers don't even know seven is Mazda's, so I had to go with racing garages.
BTW, Cheuk in Seoul, I'd just come back from Seoul. Nice city you've got there. I wish I could go back shopping at Dootah, meang dong, and I miss your Kim chi a lot

Bought new 93 in Fall of 92. Used dealer exclusivley as I bought extended warranty. Been lucky- dealer had an ok guy. Local dealer fixed after a Cell phone guy ruined main wiring harness and I stripped a lug putting on autocross tires (have to replace rear wheelbearing to pull the driveshaft). They didn't however know how to check for Service Bulletins. I complained of the 3000 rpm stutter and a hood squeak several times. Never did squat. Since warranty is out, I've hunted down the TSB and found problems are quite normal.
They never sold enough FD's to ramp up service tech education (IMO) and since they were killed in 95 no dealership would do any more than they had to do in learning about these cars.
If you're not a good "wrench" find a good import guy before you buy.

I really WISH I could be the original owner of an FD. In 1995 Mazda was giving huge discounts on brand new FDs...
Unfortuately, I was in high school at the time, but I would jump at such an opportunity today.
Damn, $89K for an FD?
That makes importing one into the US seem downright cheap!
So they STILL haven't fixed the overheating problem, even on new FDs?? That's depressing. I was planning on trying to find a newer FD when I go to Japan and I was thinking that they were much more reliable than the older, US-spec ones...

Original owner 1993 Montego touring. Never had a major failure (engine or turbo's) Had great service from Marlin Mazda in Miami, I drove past two other dealers to get there.
Bought mine new in late 93'. Red touring edition with tan interior. I have 63K on original drivetrain and turbos. Only real trouble I ever had was a rear main seal leak at about 50K. This is my daily driver.
I bought mine new June 93. Currently have 83K on original motor. I purchased the extended warranty and blew the original intake manifold gasket (which had just been redesigned, fortunately for me). The cracks that were found in the turbo housing were extensive enough to warrant replacement
(I kept the old turbos which certainly have more miles on them). The Mazda mechanic that did warranty work did a fine job each time it was in (which wasn't often). The only real headache I had was the CD player that after the fifth one still skipped excessively Mazda gave me a $600 check to buy an Alpine that works flawlessly. My car has been a fine automobile and I will have it as long as I breath.

Bought my VR in June of '92 from the dealer. They were good at taking care of all the recall work that needed to be done. Also did the 30-60 thousand mile service through them. In my area the dealership has pretty good mechanics for the "routine" stuff. For mod work I go to M2. Currently 74K on original engine and no problems. I guess I'm lucky.

The two best things I've done in the last 10 years? Divorce the old bitch and buy a new FD3S. I got a newer model bitch but kept the car.

I got a good laugh from that one!! Yeah, it was June of '92. They were just coming on the market and mine was the only one this dealer had on the lot. Instant love affair (with the car, not the dealer!).
Bought mine new and off the delivery truck in So Cal in April of 1992 --- a 1993 R-1. Have 42000 miles on it and still going strong. Dealer did many factory backed services and fixits since mine was one of first they had sold (learning curve). Not an experience I would want to repeat (good thing was they always gave me a driver while mine was in the shop). The service manager and I become buddies. I haven't driven it much in the last couple of years but I just had a bunch of the reliability mods and suspension upgrades done and will be looking forward to picking it up this week!

Original owner of 1995 white 5-speed car. Touring model. Sunroof, leather, etc.
Purchased in May 1996. I was told then that it was one of two white ones left in the US.
Use summers only . . . have always done so. Still in virtually new condition.
Also, 100% stock.
