white smoke 93 7500$

ok heres the deal, there is an rx7 that im looking at that the owner says on startup after sitting idle for a few days blows white smoke for a few mins, im assuming this is a blown or leaking coolant seal from searching, as well he says it backfires somewhat, so heres my question, is this car worth his asking price of 7500, i would of course try to negotiate, he as well said the check coolant light comes on even tho it has plenty of coolant

its a 1993 touring with 128 on the clock, and the problems listed above + some rock chips,so should i jump on this or what, thanks alot.

humm I'd say something around 5-6K is what I would pay dependent on the overall condition of the car and if it's all original. Maybe a little more if it's in good condition.

my car did this when i first bought it. engine ran great for a year ~10k miles. now its most likely done for. considering that getting a rebuilt motor installed will be ~$3500...

$6500 or so would be a a great price already depending on condition of interior and exterior.. rock chips are nothing to be worried about though..

No guarantees on this for the car you're looking at though. Sure the engine MIGHT last 10k miles, but maybe this owner has been running the car like this for a while.

If you can't afford to swap in a new longblock (either by yourself or a reputable rotary mechanic), you should save up your pennies until you can afford an FD with a fresh engine. This one is likely to go at any point.

Having said that, $6500 sounds like a fair price for an FD on its last legs.

So just becase it blows a little white smoke at start up you think that the coolant seal is going?

Does he have a full exhaust? DP, MP and catback.

These cars are known to give off white smoke at start up when you have a full exhaust set up. So a little smoke is ok it's just condensation.

Backfiring will occur when you have a full exhaust too.

If your coolant seal is bad you will know it. Tons of white smoke, hard to start due to the plugs being wet, over heating, and unexplainable loss of coolant.

This forum is great, lots of info. But to be honest I think it makes us all little paranoid sometimes.

If the coolant seal is blown, it will puff white smoke all of the time. Not just at idle. Believe me, I know lol

IMHO, if it's a clean title it's worth it. reguardless if it needs a rebuild...
7500 for the car + 5500 for the rebuild = 13k

i spent 13k for mine + a 5500 rebuild.. and i'm one happy FD owner

mine blew "a little white smoke" when i bought it too. it flooded only

3 times in one year. and i drove the damn thing 10k. it just slowly got worse, and had problems like slowly filling overfill that eventually would oveflow.. but this would come and go, the car would be w/o problems for months at a time. it never smoked when driving, never hard to start except for when flooded, never overheats. coolant seals that are on their way out are the hardest things to diagnose when looking for a fd... unless its severly blown.

annnd now i need a rebuild

Not always true. My blown coolant seal would smoke for 20 minutes sometimes and not at all others. After it stopped it wouldn't smoke again until the next shutdown. Just depends on how bad it is.

As for the price unless its low mileage and in mint condition not a dime over 5K less depending on the condition. Engine swap/rebuilds run $5000 up to $9000 if the the turbos need replacing. My blown coolant seal and 99 spec turbos was around $8500 without porting. If I would have know that I was going to sink 15k under the hood I would have dropped and a V8 in the girl and would be bitching about 11 mpg.
