Where to put temp sensor?

Where is the best place/most accurate place to put a temp sensor. I just ordered the SPA dual gauge for temp and boost and need to know where to put the temp sensor. The thought of drilling into the block or whatever scares me but whatever.

I want to keep the stock gauge functional, just for grins, and would like to monitor it with the digital, otherwise I guess I would just use the hole where that sensor is; someone else said they did this, rendering the stock non functional but I would like to leave it.

Can you just piggy back/splice into that sensor? That might be easiest, but then if it failed BOTH gauges would be wrong, I guess.

Thanks in advance.

David

Don't mess with the stock sensor. Take out one of the Hex shaped nuts on the Water fill neck. There is one on the top next to the cap and one on the side, pick one. Go to home depot or lows and get an adaptor out of the plumbing section. I think its a 5/8 but not sure, just take both the Hex nut and the sensor and set one that fits. Just after the thermostat is the hottest place which is where you will be. Just keep that in mind if it looks a little high.

I tried to use those pluggs before, but my sensor stuck out too much and interfered with just about everything. I ended up drilling and tapping a hole on the flat spot next to the level sensor. There is about 1/2" wall thickness there. The only problem with this set up is that you do not get warm up temp until after 180, but I figure that's all I need to really know...what's hot, not cold.

You can also put a "T" in the coolant line that goes thru the throttle body... And then you can put the sensor there.

OK..........just to prove to you that I really don't know WTF I'm talking about; it seems as though Manatecu and spooledup7 are talking about the sensor actually being directly in contact with metal, whereas JDHUEGEL is talking about the sensor being in the flow of the coolant. Do I have all of this right? and is one spot better than the other?

What is the original sensor in contact with, the engine block (metal) or is it in the coolant?

Thanks, and yes, I'm a geek for not knowing.

Depends what you want to know. If you put it in the water neck you will not see temperature until the thermostat opens but this will be the hotest place. You can tap into the line on the throttle body and this will give you the average engine temperature.

OK...is there a sensor brand that fits at the water filler neck? I'll search for tapping into the throttle body line.
thanx

Thanx for the info guys. Good alternatives to avoid tapping into the aluminum housing.
