i bought mine 2 months ago it has a rebuild as done by PFS with like 12k on it, my suspension clunks, and my alternator is on the fritz, but other than that she pulls strong. As i see it the FD is nothing more than another high maintenance girlfriend in my life, just keep up with her needs and it all pays off.

I've averaged one problem necessitating experienced hands (taking it to the shop) every year and a half or so. And my FD had every bolt on under the sun, and I drove the CRAP outta it. Had 91K on the clock when I finally took her under - and get this: the original motor and turbos NEVER blew Other than that, there were random small quirks here and there, but nothing to lose sleep over.

As for BMWs, Mahjik, while Beemers are great, I can also tell you from first-hand experience that their electronic components are JUNK. Car = made in Germany, but electronics = made in Mexico or something. Freakin garbage. And this isn't just based on my own experience; I have a few friends w/ Beemers. And the worst part? Their electronic components are E-X-P-E-N-S-I-V-E. Woowee lol.

Having said that, I'd love to have the '03 M5 as my Daily Driver

Maybe some of the other models, but those aren't normal problems of the E46 M3 (which we were discussing).

here is what i think:

it's not the modifications that ruin your car, if you just did the modifications the correct way in the first place, nothing would really go wrong.

well, yes and no. If you modify your FD to 600 rwhp, it's not going to be as reliable as a near stock car. Also, I've seen it numerous times where guys modify the hell out of their cars and make them unstreetable----loud as hell, uncomfortable seats, stiff suspension, no heat or a/c or p/s or stereo etc etc.

Other than brakes, tires, plugs and one $12 ground wire and one lug nut 10 years. 40k all stock with the exception of a downpipe. I blew the paper LIM gasket - 5 years and 5k after the down pipe. It almost made up for the years of hassle free transport in one bill....
