Whats the best stock mount intercooler to buy

Talked to a buddy and he reccomended the m2 medium stock mount intercooler. I dont want to relocate the battery and all the other crap. so i am looking at buying the m2 performance medium stock mount intercooler. i guess it is a pretty decent price.

I was just wondering if any of you rx7 guru's had any other companies that sell a better product. I am not to worried about the price since i have a bunch of money saved up since i just got back from afghanistan.

so let me know what you think. thanks for your help

I agree with your friend. I think the ASP (ASP designed it originally and is selling them now) Medium is the best stock mount IC for your needs (keep battery, etc.). It has a big core, a great duct, and short and sweet piping. You will need an aftermarket intake to install the Medium -- it doesn't fit with the stock air box. Here are some pics of mine: http://maxcooper.com/rx7/parts_info/ic/index.html

The latest version comes with a cast pipe that fits better with the air pump. However, I ran mine with the air pump and two different versions of the old (non-cast) pipe without too much trouble. I am sure the cast pipe it better, though.

I couldn't agree more! Also, try searching around the forums for "ASP Intercooler" or "M2 Intercooler", you will be able to dig up a bunch of reviews and information on the intercooler. Also, if you go to this site you can see a comparison of the ASP medium with other intercoolers available for our cars. http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/i...olers.html#ICP

If money is not an issue, you should maybe take a look at a V-mount ?

Yes, M2 licensed the ASP design for resale. The license has since been taking back by Kevin (ASP) and is now only sold under the ASP name:

thanks mahjik for the quick response. So then the intercoolers that are for sale on the m2 website who makes them? Are the m2 intercoolers just as good as the asp ones or is there a difference? thanks for the help i just want to get the best medium stock mount intercooler available.

Right now i am planning on calling m2 next week and ordering the medium stock mount intercooler and the greddy intake elbow. that is the plan at least.

Now is there still the same problem with the greddy intake elbow that max was talking about . I cant believe greddy would sell a part that doesnt have the nipple already made into the pipe for the aws. I guess i will just have someone weld a bung onto it so i can hook up the aws hose.

thanks guys,
thomas

As far as I know, M2 is no more (as far as selling parts).

M2 was manufacturing the ASP design. Kevin took back the manufacturing this past year (for many reasons listed in older threads).

As far as the AWS, you can eliminate it, it's not a big deal.

Don't overlook the PFS. Basically a drop in, looks good, nothing else needed besides your stock parts. Install the cold air system and the IC in a half hour. Used, it's priced pretty nice, and it works.

The Greddy Elbow is sold separately. So, you need that and you'll need to ALSO order that as well.

Yep, you can just cap it. I think I read a later message where Max said he capped it off again and didn't have a problem. I removed my AWS system from the car (running a rechipped stock ECU) and it was just fine.

I should update my site, but I never got around to having a nipple welded to the GReddy elbow. I moved to a warmer climate and didn't have the cold-start stalling problem ever again. I suggest you cap it (since it is cheap and easily reversed) and see how it works out. If you get stalling on cold starts in cold weather, you might consider having a nipple welded to the GReddy elbow. But I think there is a good chance that you won't have that problem, and even if it does occur it isn't a very big deal.

Does anyone know the differences between the asp large and the pettit cool charge 3? They both seem like similar designs, do they use the same core? Is one any better than the other? And does pettit include the greddy elbow with the intercooler kit. It isnt clear on their website. Thanks.

I had a local machine shop weld a nipple onto my Greddy elbow. I think it was like $30 and an easy job.

Hey I have a PFS SMIC for sale on Ebay. Its great because you dont have to relocate your battery and it uses the stock piping.

I had an SR Motorsports stock mount before. It had a much larger core than stock and everything fit up great.

The asp med has low pressure drop at high boost, and nice duct. A simple fan and shroud are easly fitted, linked to 2 rad fans, so all run at same time in hot traffic. This eliminates any heat soak issues, stagging, etc. only issue is small duct inlet will allow air temps to rise during hot road track events.
