Any advice on how to get the nipple out? I lubed it up with some PB blaster and put the vice grips to it, but it wouldn't budge...

Mine wouldn't pull out either. I just used a cutting disc on my dremel and shaved it off flush with the housing. Then sized a drill bit to the OD of the tube and drilled it out. Tapped and installed the plug with a little teflon tape.

... when the ast is in place there is a flow restrictor in the line that greatly reduces the flow of coolant bypassing the radiator.
Where is this restrictor? Inside the AST? My FD is stock, bought new, and when replacing its AST and hoses I found no restrictor in the hose(s).

The restriction is built into the stock AST nipple.

Thanks, Mahjik. I was worried that I might have inadvertently thrown a restrictor bead away when replacing the AST hoses. But all is good, since I "stuck with stock."

FWIW, at least a few of the aftermarket ASTs had the restrictor. This one, which I sold a few years back, had one just like OEM. Great piece but it wouldn't fit with the PFS SMIC.
