What would you do?

so, my tranny gave out on my while i was driving the other day. i lost every gear except 4th, so i had to drive 80 miles back to the storage place IN 4TH GEAR (which totally sucked). do you know how hard it is to try and start the car from a dead stop in 4th? i thought it was going to explode

so now i have this dilemma:

should i rebuild the tranny that i have ($1000)

OR

buy a used one that might break sooner rather than later (range $300-400)

it's a toss up i know

right now the car is in storage, but come up september i'll have a whole month and a half off so i'll have more than enough time to do just about anything.

i'd really like to know WWJD?

your right, sorry for the sarcasm.

i think its all up to personal preference. you are correct with your prices and also your assumptions on the tranny. your taking a big chance buying a used tranny. but i would consider it your best choice. you can find good, low milage ones in the forsale section. its best to just do research on reputable buyers selling them.

if you want a problem free tranny and plan on keeping the fd for good, then i would spend the extra cash to get it rebuilt. that way you know its going to hold up. it sucks syncos are such a problem with fd's

i think i'm going to go with a rebuild, i have until september to save my pennies and i get the peace of mind knowing that it is a fresh tranny.

i know a couple ppl where i'm from so i could prolly get it down to around 800 bones

or i could do it myself....i've all the time in the world

that would be an interesting tackle.....anyone ever done it?

i shot him an email to see if he's still in the business considering that thread is from 2005

either way though, i would have to ship a $550 tranny to the east coast which def would not be cheap nowadays with gas prices the way they are so if i end up spending a little more for a rebuild i'll prolly go that route

Shipping is not going to be as expensive as you might think. Keep in mind, most rebuilds I've seen cost more than expected. If you've never done one before, you can add in costs of possibly damaging parts as well as the thought that it might not be right the first time you do it. It not unlike rebuilding an engine for the first time which my suggestion then is always budget time to do it twice. Once for your first time, second time to fix your mistakes.

Also, send a PM to "Japan2LA". He typically has used transmissions for sale. I think that actually might be his email address in that thread, but I can't remember for sure.

i just called him and he still does it

he buys whole clips so he knows how many miles are on them. still charges $550 for the tranny and it's going to be about $150 for shipping to the east coast.

that's going to put me at $700 in the hole which is better than a rebuild so i'm considering this. plus, i get to keep my other tranny and tinker with it.

i think it's a good deal.........thanks for the help guys

as long as you can find a reliable exporter of the JDM transmissions the shorter 5th gear isn't much of a problem. i actually like it being shorter since the gearing on the oem tranny's is so long. just do your research before u click "order" and u'll be good.\!

I don't think I've ever heard someone say they ended up paying what they were quoted for a tranny job, it's usually more.

Considering the cost, you could go through 2-3 used trannys before you spend what you would of on 1 rebuild. And seeing how dropping the tranny isn't that hard, I would personally take that route.

i was quoted $1200 for a rebuild with a warranty BUT that was just a standard rebuild and nothing extra was included if anything else was broken.

so, i think i'm gonna go with Brian, he seems like a nice, cool dude

anyone that likes FD and puts parts in my hands is a good guy

.....until they break

he's said that he's sold 100+ trannies and he's only had ONE guy call back only because the guy didn't put fluid in it after he took it out of the crate (because you can't ship them with fluid in them) and he ended up frying it up. so....end of story

good deal....i'm happy so far

I always assumed FD 5spd trannys are pretty strong. The fact that you lost every gear except 4th lead me to believe someone prior to you had some effect to that as i have never heard of that happening often, even on other cars.

I would just try to find the lowest mileage 5spd tranny you can find.

Cause you figure you rebuild your current one, not only is it more money and a bigger hassle, but in the end you still have the same ol tranny that brought you the problem in the first place, regardless if you replaced the broken pieces.
