they usually use bar and plate cores from spearco or similar. I've heard recently that tub and fin are even better for SMIC -- which the rule I always had heard was tub & fin for FMIC and bar & blate for SMIC. I haven't had the time to investigate on the net, but I'm sure if you went looking you could find some real research from some hard core tech guys.
