Low power. The engine kind of of shakes when idling. Smoke. Smell of unburnt fuel.
Get a compression tester. That's the easiest way to know and it doesn't take long to do the test.

Smoke can be a symptom of a lot of things. Generally white sweet smelling smoke is coolant. Blue gray smoke is oil. I bought my car not knowing what was wrong with the engine. It was an apex seal. It was putting out some blue gray smoke. I could have screwed around for months trying to figure it out. As soon as I ran the compression check, I knew instantly it was a bad apex seal. The front rotor showed 90 psi, the back rotor was Zero.

I knew this was coming from you Joeyz87. damn I should have bet some money on it, I could get some new parts. Man get a compression tester and test it. Dude from all the threads you have had and everything you have told us, I would say you are screwed. Make sure though, don't listen to me, not that you have before, like how many times did we tell you to take it to a rotary mechanic. I hate to be the one to tell you this, but I told you so!! .

Ok my car ran fine until i took it to get new clutch. They give car back with it idleing up and down and stalling at stop lights. Next mornin git wont start. I found that the pressure sencor was disconneted, but i reconnect it and it still wont start. It sounds like it wants to . and there is dark grey smoke coming from exhaust when I crank it. I'm taking it to mazda dealership this week. Anyway clutch place should be responsible for any damage caused from running it with map sencor disconnected.

Screw the dealer. Since you're in the Bay Area, do yourself a favor and take your car to Rick's Rotary Performance (http://www.ricksrotary.com) in Pleasanton. Because FDs are rare cars nowadays, the dealerships hardly ever see them, and more often than not won't troubleshoot the car properly: Loose MAP sensor hose? "You need a new engine and turbos, son!"
