CT What set-ups pass emmisons/smog

Im trying to plan a setup that will give me the maximum power output while still having the ability to pass emissions. I would like to do this without putting alcohol in the tank or anything extreme. Also its okay if minor mods are required like replacing a straight pipe with a stock cat come emissions time.

Unless you are going to keep all the other emissions in the car, you'll have to swap in the airpump etc when you "swap" in a cat at emissions time.

Why not just go with a DP, Bonez Hi-Flo cat and your choice of catback? In most state, that will pass emissions without a problem and still provide good power. Unless you are willing to swap in/out all of your emissions components, there isn't much of a choice out there in parts. If you are willing to swap out your emissions components each time for your testing, I don't know why you are asking for opinions then.

I guess then I don't understand what you are asking. As long as you have a proper stand-alone ECU with proper emissions components, you should be able to tune any streetported motor for good emissions.

I have a street port with a 3" exhaust and a single high flow cat running on an untuned PFC and I passed MD emissions.

Here is what I was thinking:
Mid streeet port. Full exhaust with the ability to swap back in the stock cat and possibly an electric Airpump out of a vette. Non seq upgraded twins or possibly a smaller single turbo. Intake, FMIC. Upgraded Fuel pump and possibly upgraded injectors (2-850cc was what I had in mind). Would either need a modified stock ecu or some sort of piggyback system.

See this is what I am looking for. What kind of streetport? Mild port or large or somewhere in the middle?

General question: Can you pass emissions if you go single?

I am trying to figure out a setup that gives me maxium HP and still be able to pass emissions. I am well aware that a PFC ECU with some bolt ons will pass.

I would like to go north of 350 to the wheels and be able to pass emissions.

Any streetport with the proper tuning and proper emissions components should pass.

How would you tune it. Keep in mind that my state plugs into the ecu and pulls the codes during emmisions. Thus having a Haltech or something that would be extremely tunable is not an option. Unless I use a direct plug in; and during emissions plug a stocker in and vent my boost.

There lies your issue. Each state is different if you are asking how to pass your state's emissions testing, then you need to ask in a regional forum. However, as mentioned, any streetport motor will pass with proper tuning and proper emissions components. When you have to start eliminating those things, you'll run into a problem.

Are you sure they plug into the ECU? Most of those tests for tapping into the ECU are OBD-II where as the FD is OBD-I. i.e. do they do this with the current state of your FD?

^ CT is the same. In CT if the car is to low they will not put it on the roller dyno, just do a sniffer test. Blackscorpio thanks for letting me brorrow that stock cat-back back in 2002. After you have a FD once you will always need one. What happen to your two FD's?

That sucks i was going to say i've seen a Haltech tune that passed CA sniffer test with NO smog/air pump and NO cat.

you need to ask this in the regional forum and speak with people in your state. Every state is different. Youll get a 50 different responses and 1 of them will be correct for your situation.

You need to investigate the testing procedures in CT. What are they? How often? etc..

Dyno? sniffer? visual? you'll want to primarily investigate OBD-I testing procedures.

Edit: i just realized that I wrote exactly what Mahjik wrote. So I agree with him 110%

Hey how is it going. I eventually sold those two FD's to buy my first house I eventually bought another one(wasn't gonna pass emissions), which I eventually sold. Now Im on the market for number 4. You still have your FD?

That's cool I can't believe its been 7 years. I am assuming you have done CT emmisions. did they just do the sniffer or did they plug into your ECU.

They do not plug in the ecu just the sniffer test, I test my car 3 times and passed all the times. If you want to go single turbo and pass emmisions just buy a turbo that will allow the stock smog pump.

I've been down this road, and you need to make a firm decision. . .do you want 350 RWHP or 400+ RWHP. For 350 see my mods. . .I'd recommend BNR sequential way over single for this HP goal. Hi flow cat, air pump, etc. . .it's all still on my car and it is a great daily driver/fun ride that passes GA emissions every year. Also, I haven't heard of any state that plugs into our ecu on an rx7 (I think that was clarified above?). Therefore, you need some form of aftermarket ecu (I have apexi) to tune properly. Anyway, just another thought starter for you.
