What radio came with the R2?

Just curious what the stock radio on a 1994 R2 was. Mine has an aftermarket unit and I want to bring it fully back to stock.

Cassette Deck and cubby pocket.

However, an acceptable OEM replacement which has a CD player and AUX input on the back (for a modern phone or iPod) is the headunit out of a 2002-2005ish Mazda Miata and/or Protege. This is the same unit the modern RX-7s had in Japan.

Why would you want to go back to a old technology? I understand wanting to go back to something simple and stock but a Cassette Deck!?

This is not my primary car and because of its mileage and condition I think keeping it stock will make it more valuable in the future. The current setup does not suit me at all as it looks completely out of place and I want it removed. I like the stock look of the radio as the materials are the same as the dash and I can always add a separate USB if I want.

I totally get wanting OEM for OEM sake. If it's an investment / part of a collection it make sense. However, that Miata radio IS a good option for having "OEM" with a tad of modern capabilities. They can be had for $100-$150 on eBay all day and look right at home.

Either way, try sending tomsn16 a private message. He might have an OEM one lying around.

If not, post a WTB in the 3rd Gen For Sale section. I'm sure someone has one.

Thanks for the lead. I have to remove the current setup which is on my to-do list. Time is not on my side with working on cars!

Is the 93 base/r1 head unit cross-compatible with 94+ base/r2?

Good deal on a cherry unit in the FS section.

I also agree new decks mostly look like garbage in FD's, and that pure stock is where the money is.
You don't see phat systems with mad bass at Concours D'elegance.

I'm glad this came up. The display light on my stock cassette head unit is flaking out, so I might go with the 2002-vintage CD unit.

Boom. Perfect.

If you have a double DIN head unit you are replacing and you still need the cubby pocket, there is a good discussion on options here:

My 93 R1 had a factory non-Bose CD in addition to the non-Bose head unit. I'm 3rd owner but believe that's the way it came. I run a Nakamichi these days and looking toward a BT replacement. But still have both.

I also had a Nakamichi on my previous FD. Loved it, simple but not boring

I"m looking to update the interior with a double din unit that has Navi, Bluetooth etc

I recently removed the subwoofer that came with the car.

But obviously it's a special one for the R model, the back of it had all these holes in the case for weight savings. MAZDA thought of everything. Hell, I think even the STYX CD that was left in it was lightened.
