What is this in my AC evaporator?
My car had the AC system removed by a previous owner. The lines were left exposed for who knows how long. I have my dash apart so I removed my evaporator and case today to clean it up. This gunk stuff came out. Any ideas what this stuff might be? I want to install AC in the future. Can I flush out the evaporator? Or do I need a new one?

Looks like it may be refer oil. Use only a refrigerant specific flush for the system as it will be non reactive when you are done. I would be concerned if it appears that there is water mixed in with it or if there is much in the way of debris in there. The unit's expansion valve has a very small metering orifice; some of them have a small mesh screen (that can clog) but I'm not sure if you can access it for cleaning.
If it's not that bad, you can always clean it and try it, or send it out to be cleaned. If it seems there is a lot of crud, then I would get it cleaned/tested or just get another so you don't risk having the crud propagate throughout the system.

That's old, nasty, water-logged refrigeration oil.
Best thing to do is give it a good flushing with an A/C system specific solvent followed by lots of DRY shop air.
Just replace the expansion valve. Regardless of which valve you need, they're cheap.

Looks like ****, you sure it's not from last night's partying? Nah, since you got the panel out, I would also replace the heater hoses. They tend to get brittle in time and develop micro cracks and leak coolant in the interior.
Being alcohol based it will eat up your dashboard and other vinyl material. You can tell when the windows on FD gets fogged up after sitting overnight and the smell of coolant.
