What is most likely leaking here (rear differential) ?

I took my car out for the first time in a while, drove it about 100 miles this morning.
When I parked it, I noticed a smell of burnt oil, which I have smelled on occasion a few times but always attributed to a small pan leak I have, getting onto the exhaust. However, this picture seems to show a leak on the right side of the differential or inboard CV joint....?

Based ONLY on your picture, the only other thing it might be is a failed differential bushing leaking down from above. But that would be easy to check.

It really does look like an axle seal to me too. It's not a bad job.

+1, Axle seal.... I had this exact same leak a few years ago, a new seal solved the problem.

Thanks, guys! And Sgtblue....that is a great write-up! I will definitely have to do this shortly.

Anyone have the part number of that seal, by chance?

Thanks again!

If you go thru Malloy, he'll know what you need. Guess I should have listed it into that thread.
If you order it locally and still need it, I can probably get it for you tomorrow when I go down to my garage....I think I bought two thinking the other would probably start leaking. But that never happened.

Edit: If you check the picture of the old and new seals in that thread, the part number (#PO43-27-238A) is visible.

Good information here. Just for searching purposes for the future I looked up the part number from Mazda, they list 2: M0A1-27-238A and P043-27-238.
