In 1992, there was a Type R, X and S, in Japan.

My car is a 1992 Type S, with cloth seats, no sunroof, no cruise control, and automatic trans.

Some things to note, in respect to JDM cars, courtesy of Eric Eason:

The chassis VIN number after the FD3S-denotes the series and so production year, if yours says FD3S-1xx it means it is a 1992 spec car.

The enfini badges, twin spots, (with yellow bulbs), front-rear strut towers, smooth painted dash panels, silverl bezel gauges and rear seats were standard on all 1992 Japanese market FD's

R cars were always manuals. R2 all started Japanese VIN FD3S-2xxx and were 2 seaters.

The S model should just have the normal temp. control system and no cruise control

The JDM S was the bottom of the line spec car. These came without sunroof, cruise control or fancy temp control panel for the heater & AC. These cars could have cloth seats (in a black checker pattern) Automatic or manual. They were sparsely optioned, but could have front and rear spoilers. and foglights.

The JDM X (Touring) cars were a step up, and could have leather interiors, sunroof, Bose wave sound system, cruise control and climate control. They were more plush, and very similar to the "Popular Equipment Package" (or PEP, whatever it was abbreviated to) in the United States cars. Supposedly had softer suspension, but I cant confirm.

The Japanese R1 and R2 cars were the more sporting versions, with stiffer suspension (allegedly) than the X Touring. Only available in manual, they had dual oil coolers, front fogs, front/rear spoilers, etc. They did not get climate control or cruise control. They got the fake suede/alcantara seats, not cloth or leather.

Power windows, locks and mirrors were standard across all FD cars and are not a telltale sign of anything.

1992- 1995 is Series 6.
Beginning 1996, ending 1998 is Series 7.
1999- 2002 is Series 8.

Cloth seats make me lean towards it being a Type S, Series 6, 1992 JDM car, as this was the model that cloth interior was offered in. R cars had fake suede seats.
However it is possible that someone put cloth seats into the car. If it originally had suede seats, it could be an R. But if the cloth ones look original, its most likely a Type S

Hey Gomez, I checked up, because yes, JDM Type R do have twin coolers specifically.
Also, you're an Aussie like me, so you would know a bit more about the JDM cars, being RHD and all.

JDM Type X (plush touring spec- leather, Bose, cruise control, etc) does not have twin coolers (unless its an automatic, it will show 2 coolers from the front, even though one is for auto trans)

JDM Type S in a manual trans, 1992, beginning VIN FD3S-1XXXXX could have dual coolers. (I have a black manual 9/92 JDM Type S in my workshop that does have dual coolers, and cloth checker-type seats, no sunroof, and has done 93,000km and is a pretty mint car.)

The Types R and S were very close in spec. Both having no sunroof or luxury items. But the thing that differentiates Type R and Type S apart, is a cloth interior.

Case in point- my Dad has a 1992 Type R, Black, no sunroof, no luxury items. My car is a Type S, black, no sunroof or luxury items either. But mine has cloth interior and my dad's car is suede.
Thats the only telling difference in the options between the two cars that we can find.

Out of the 14 FD cars we have in the shed, we imported all but one from Japan. That car is a 1997 Aussie RZ. The rest of them are Type R, and two red Type X's. They are very hard to pick.
Especially in the US, there is not much known about the different "Types" of equipment spec packages in RHD Japanese market cars, as these cars are not widely owned in the USA.
Factor into that, the Aussies and Japanese have a "Series 6, 7 & 8" designation for different technical updates to the design over the 10 year production run. Americans only got the RX-7 for a few years of production, and only got what we Australians call the "Series 6" cars. They never got the later Series 7 or 8 like we did in Japan/Australia.

But thats fairly irrelevant to the topic, just threw it in there in case someone searched for this topic in future, because I know from experience that trying to find out what "Type" designation your car is, can be near on impossible if you dont know what to look for

The version I Type R has suede seats, two oil coolers, a front strut bar and a rear spoiler.

We know this car has two out of the four (and non leather seats).

If the owner would like to post his VIN I can not only confirm the model, but also the build date.

SA3R, mazdaspeed306 and powerhour.....I suggest you join FDRX7.com if you haven't already. Lots of JDM info there.

Tell them I sent you
