what FD is better (overall)?
i know the main differences between the Touring and R1 models, but is there that big of a differece that i should get one over the other? i am talking about 1993 FD. thanks
I agree wholeheartedly with the general advice to find the best one you can.
But, you might consider how you will use the car when making your choice. I think the base and R models are more versatile than the Touring. You stick better in the non-leather seats if you want to do auto-X or track events. If you're tall, the sunroof will reduce headroom, which may be a big problem if you wish to wear a helmet in the car. The Bose system is more difficult to upgrade than the non-Bose stereo.
The Touring model is your choice if you want leather and a sunroof, but if you don't care much about those items and can find a clean non-Touring car, you should go for it.

yup best condition one you can find....
doesn't take long to mod one...past the performance of any other models...so it really does not matter....only thing I would say is that if you are tall and you want to race with a helmet on...get one w/o sunroof

thanks for the advice guys. i was deciding between a new car and an FD, but i think i am gonna go with the 1993 FD. they just don't make new sports cars like they used to. anyways, i have about $20K, you think that will get me a good enough 93 FD?
Yea very true. When shopping for an FD, it's not a question of which one to get and then getting that exact model and type you want, but more along the lines of when you do find one, that hopefully your mind will be made up to get particular model and type
. It's the other way around. Of course I personally would want a 94 R2 only because it soudns cool, other than that no other reason since those parts ain't going to stay stock for long

Remember you are buying a used car so what ever the car came with is BULL ****. The only good thing about the R1or R2 is the second oilcooler. All the suspension diferences are now obsolete since most FD are used and usually high miles now. So the suspesion usually needs to be replaced.
I agree with JoeD. The best Rx-7 is the one you can find in good condition. Everything else is just personal preferrances. Sunroof, leather and all that stuff.
As a used car there is not FD beter than the other.

If you can, get a 94. They worked out a lot of the original bugs in 94(paint chipping, suspension shock clunking, engine fires, interior trim, wheel spokes cracking), but left plenty for your attention (suspension bushing clunking terrible stereo(s) ect
. Keep in mind that all of the problems can be fixed, and many of the previous owners have probably already had the misfortune of dealing with them.
I have a 94 touring. I love the glass moonroof(makes the cabin seem less cramped), and the rear wiper is useful for parallel parking in rainy conditions. I wasn't too concerned about the softer suspension because a lot of my time is spent driving on crappy roads in Boston. The other big advantage of the 94s is the seat belt buckles look much cooler

cb, dp, intake, pfc, ACT clutch, 9.5lb flywheel, stupid expensive aftermarket stereo, custom leather shift & parking brake booties, trunk full of law books.

Agreed that you should just try to find one that is in good condition but i would also try to get a 94 as others and I have done. I personally wanted white which is only available in 94 and 95 anyhow so this was a no brainer for me. I got the PEP also and thats exactly what i wanted cause of the leather and sunroof. This is a choice that is really up to the individual though. Just my 2cents.

I agree to a point - Unless you want the car as an investment - find one that you can get for the best price - if you can go for the LOWEST milage and Latest BUILD DATE - the only real descision is SUNROOF or NO - all the other options can be added/removed from any model fairly easily. Any CLEAN, STRAIGHT FD can be rebuilt top to bottom for 10k-15k (engine/trans/suspension) and a fully restored car may soon be worth 30k, most parts are available either through MAZDA or Aftermarket.
