In my 7 years of dealing with RX7's I have never heard what detonation sounds like, does anyone have a sound bit of one? Is is loud? I have asked people, but you know how that goes.

 

from what i heard it sounds like a new motor. to be honest i have heard it on piston motors but never the rx7(thankfully). easiest way to get pinging is usually with a five speed in a crappy car. drive real slow then pop her in fifth, gun it. you then hear crappy sounds coming from the motor. dont get it confused with engine just lugging though.

detonation sounds like popcorn coming from the engine....

 

I would describe it as a crackling noise...
