What does a defective bov sound like?

I've got a loud whistle under boost - never heard it before. I actually kind of like it. Kind of a Batmobile thing.

God I love diagnosing turbo system leaks.........

what bov is it? stock? If its stock I'm not to sure I know you can blow into it like a turbo would using your mouth and plug the hole with your finger and if air leaks it may be having problems... also you might want to check the TB to intake elbow o-ring I've had a few go bad on me. the charge relief valve may be bad also...

Stock bov - time to go start chasing possible leaks.......TB o ring is only a year old - charge relief valve - that's a likely culprit - its only 9 years and 6 months old!

Thanks!

Ummm, yeah that's pretty obvious, but before I started chasing stuff I thought it made sense to start with the easy to get parts. Time for some Leak-Tec.

I've got the loud whistle under secondary boost (only after 4500 rpm), after many posts, much reading, and pulling the whole thing apart, I've determined that my secondary turbo is gradually dying... I think it is commonly known as the scream of death. If you find anything to the contrary, please let me know!

Actually, I shouldn't say pulling the whole thing apart, I just took off the UIM and every hose I could find to inspect them... I haven't checked the turbo to verify my theory.

I found the culprit.

The black hard plastic (stock) duct that goes from the Y-pipe to the rubber joint which attaches to the bottom of the intercooler had a small, hairline crack at the bracket where it attaches to the block with two 10 mm bolts.
I think aging and engine torque caused the split, they'e been known to crack before. I sprayed all the plumbing with Leak-Tec (soapy water will do in a pinch) with the engine running and started looking for the bubbles.

A little epoxy putty, some flat black spray paint, and a little bending of the bracket to eliminate stress at the mounting points and it's back to full boost. I really need to replace all that stuff with metal - but $290.00 for a few shiney pipes? Insane.

Time to hit McMasterCarr.

I GET THE SAME WHISTLE AND NEVER KNEW WHAT IT WAS. NOW MY CAR IS NOT BOOSTING.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. I think its going to be a cheap fix and I am not going to break the bank fixing my turbos. Now i'm actually excited to take my car to the shop to get the problem checked out

Well, don't get too excited, my epoxy fix failed under full boost. What the heck, it only cost $3.00 and about 20 minutes. I'll probably just get a new $$ OEM pipe.

There are other places where the stock stuff can fail - check 'em all out. Especially the rubber "connectors"
They fail first. At ten years of service nothing suprises me anymore.

I guess $290 is cheap compared to the replacement costs for the OEM stock junk.........time to bite the bullet and sleep at night knowing that it won't happen again.
